Resume scanner, resume scorer, resume analyzer: one free tool

People search for the same thing with different words. Here is what each step of this checker does with your file:

The score is a guide, not a hiring decision: each employer configures its own ATS. Fix the weak spots it shows, then check again.

Resume checker or ATS score checker? This resume checker is a general resume review: it needs no job description and tells you whether the resume works on its own. The ATS Score Checker answers a different question: how well the resume matches one specific job posting.

What the resume checker scores

No job description needed: your resume is scored on 8 sections that recruiters and ATS software both care about, each with its own score and fixes.

Completeness

Contact details, summary, work experience, education and skills: the sections every recruiter expects. Anything missing or too thin is flagged so you can fill the gap, and personal details US and Canadian employers do not want (photo, date of birth, ID numbers) are flagged for removal.

Impact evidence

“Managed a team of 5” is a task; “Led a team of 5 to ship v2.0, cutting churn 18%” is an achievement. The checker looks for numbers and results in your bullets and tells you where they are missing.

Formatting & length

Clear section headings, consistent dates, no icons or symbols that ATS software turns into garbage, and a length of 1 to 2 pages for your experience level. Formatting problems are among the most common reasons a good resume gets parsed badly.

Readability & language

Long, dense bullets and weak openings get skimmed past. The checker flags overlong bullets, passive voice, "I" and "my", buzzwords, repeated words and a US/UK spelling mix, and suggests starting each bullet with a strong action verb.

Skills mix

A good resume shows both technical skills and business skills. If your list leans too heavily one way, the checker suggests what to add, and it checks that your key skills also appear in your experience bullets.

Job match: use the ATS Score Checker

Matching a specific posting is a separate step. Paste the job description into the ATS Score Checker to see which of its keywords your resume covers and which ones are missing.

The recruiter's first skim: what to check yourself

Recruiters skim. An eye-tracking study by Ladders (2018) found they spend about 7 seconds on a first pass over a resume before deciding whether to read on. In that time, their eyes go to a handful of places:

  1. Your name + current job title (top-left header) — do they signal the seniority they want?
  2. Current employer + start date — a recognizable company? More than a year in the role?
  3. Previous job title + employer — does the career trajectory make sense?
  4. First bullet of current role — is there a quantified achievement in the first line?
  5. Education — if young / entry-level, the school + degree signals a lot; if senior, mostly ignored
  6. Overall visual pattern — is it clean and easy to scan, or a crowded mix of columns and colors?

If one of these is weak, the rest of your resume may never get read. Use this list as a self-check, then run the free checker above to catch completeness, formatting and readability issues you might miss.

Want to know how well your resume matches a specific job? Paste the job description into the ATS Score Checker to get a keyword match. When you're ready to fix things, the AI Resume Builder rewrites your resume around any job description.

Free resume review: a 10-point self-check

A resume review, free or paid, comes down to the same questions. Run the checker above first, then go through this list with your resume open. Each point is something a recruiter or reviewer would flag.

  1. Target: can someone tell which job you want within a few seconds? Your headline or most recent title and your summary should point at one kind of role.
  2. Contact block: name, phone, professional email, city and state or province, LinkedIn URL. In the US and Canada, no photo, date of birth, marital status or ID numbers.
  3. Order: experience first if you have relevant work history, education first if you are a student or recent graduate.
  4. Bullets that show results: each recent role opens with its strongest result, and at least half of your bullets contain a number, a scope or a before/after. Paste them into the bullet point checker to find the weak ones.
  5. Verbs: bullets start with a specific action verb, not "Responsible for" or "Helped with".
  6. Keywords: the skills and tools named in the job posting appear in your resume where they are true. Paste the posting into the ATS score checker to see what is missing.
  7. Dates: every role has a start and end date in the same format, and gaps longer than a few months have a one-line explanation if you want to give one (see how to explain a gap).
  8. Length: one page for most early-career resumes, two pages for experienced candidates. The resume length checker gives your word and page count.
  9. Format: a single-column layout, standard section headings, a readable font, and a text-based PDF (you can select the text with your cursor).
  10. Proofreading: read it aloud once, check company names and job titles, and keep US or Canadian spelling consistent throughout.

What a free AI resume review catches, and what it misses

Automated checkers and human reviewers are good at different things. Knowing which is which tells you when a free check is enough.

An automated checker is good at

  • Finding missing sections and contact details
  • Counting bullets, numbers and words
  • Flagging weak openers, long bullets and inconsistent dates
  • Comparing your resume with a job posting's keywords
  • Re-checking in seconds after every edit, as often as you want

A human reviewer is better at

  • Judging whether your story makes sense for the role
  • Knowing what a specific industry or employer values
  • Spotting achievements you left out or undersold
  • Advice on career changes, gaps and seniority
  • Tone: whether the resume sounds like you

A sensible order: fix everything an automated checker can find first (it is free and instant), then spend a human reviewer's time on the questions only a person can answer. You will get more out of a 30-minute review when the reviewer is not spending it on missing dates and duty bullets.

Free resume checker vs paid resume review services

If you are deciding whether to pay for a resume review or rewrite, here is what the common options cost. Prices were checked in October 2026 on each company's own pricing page and can change.

When is paying worth it? A professional writer can make sense for executive roles, a major career change, or when you have tried several versions and are still not getting interviews. For most job seekers, a free check plus tailoring the resume to each posting does more than a one-time rewrite, because the rewrite is still generic: it is not adapted to the next job you apply to. Resume checks for US and Canadian applications

Both countries expect the same basics: no photo, no age or date of birth, no marital status, and a resume of one or two pages. A few differences matter when a reviewer reads your resume:

After the review: make it job-specific

A resume that passes a general review can still miss the keywords of a specific posting. Once the checker shows no major issues, tailor the resume to each job you apply to: paste the posting into the ATS score checker to see the gaps, then use the AI resume builder to rewrite your resume around that job using only the experience you already have. Check my resume: a 5-minute routine before you apply

If you only have a few minutes before you hit Apply, this order catches the most problems for the least effort:

  1. Scan the whole resume here. Upload the exact file you will send (PDF or DOCX) and fix every red item first: missing sections, unreadable dates, symbols, length.
  2. Rewrite the weakest bullet. The checker picks it out; the free bullet point checker shows the other weak ones and offers stronger versions built only from what you wrote.
  3. Test it against the job. Paste the posting into the ATS score checker and add the missing keywords that are true for you, in your skills and in the bullet where you used them.
  4. Check the length. The resume length checker tells you if you are over one or two pages for your experience level.
  5. Run this checker again on the edited file, so a fix in one place did not break something else (a new two-column skills box, a date in another format).

Is my resume ATS friendly? How to test it yourself

"ATS friendly" means an applicant tracking system can read your resume from top to bottom and put each piece in the right field: name, contact details, job titles, employers, dates, degrees and skills. You can test it without any tool:

Then upload the file to the checker above, which reads it the way a parser does and flags headings, dates and symbols it cannot use. The full walk-through, with what to fix for each failed test, is in our guide how to check if your resume is ATS-friendly. For layouts that pass these tests, see the free ATS friendly resume templates.

ATS screening: test your resume the way employers screen it

When you apply through a company career site, your resume usually goes into an applicant tracking system first. What happens there depends on how each employer sets it up, but it generally involves three steps you can prepare for:

No checker can reproduce one employer's exact settings, so treat any score as a guide. More on the subject: why resumes get filtered out by an ATS and ATS resume tips.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the ATS score checker?

They answer two different questions. The resume checker reviews your resume on its own, with no job description: is it complete, readable and convincing? It scores 8 sections and gives a fix for each issue. The ATS Score Checker compares your resume with one job description: which of the posting's keywords you cover and which are missing. Use the resume checker first, then the ATS Score Checker for each job you apply to.

What does the resume checker look at?

Eight sections: contact info (and personal details to remove), summary, experience bullets (action verbs, numbers, length, weak or passive wording), skills (how many, the mix, whether your experience backs them up), education, formatting and ATS readability (headings, dates, symbols), length (1 to 2 pages) and language basics (US/UK spelling mix, first person, repeated words, buzzwords). Each section gets its own score and a fix for each issue.

Is my resume kept private?

Your resume is analyzed in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and you don't need an account or an email address to get your score. Only if you click Rewrite it with AI is that one bullet sent to our AI, and it is not stored.

Is it really free?

Yes. Unlimited checks, no signup and no paywall in front of your results. The AI rewrite of your weakest bullet is free too, with a few runs per hour. You only need a free AutoApplyMax account if you want AI to rewrite your whole resume.

Can you rewrite my resume for me?

Yes. Create a free account and use the AI Resume Builder: paste any job description and the AI rewrites your resume around its keywords in seconds. You get 1 free AI credit a month.

Can I get a free resume review online?

Yes. This checker gives an instant automated review with a score and a fix for each weak spot, with no signup. For a human review, try your college or university career center, public employment services such as American Job Centers in the US or Employment Ontario in Canada, or someone who hires for the role you want.

Is a free resume critique as good as a paid one?

For the mechanical checks (missing sections, weak bullets, dates, keywords, length) a free automated critique catches the same problems a paid reviewer would point out first. A paid human review adds judgment on your positioning, industry norms and career changes. Fix the mechanical issues for free first so any paid time goes to those questions.

How much does a professional resume review cost?

It varies widely. As of October 2026, TopResume's resume writing packages ran from $179 to $599, Rezi Pro was $29 a month (or $149 lifetime), and Huntr Pro was $40 a month. AutoApplyMax's AI tailoring has a free tier with 1 AI credit a month and Premium at $6.99 a month.

Does the resume checker work for Canadian resumes?

Yes. Canadian and US resumes follow the same structure: contact details, summary, experience, education and skills, with no photo or personal details. Canadian spelling is fine; just keep it consistent.

How often should I check my resume?

Run a general check whenever you change jobs or make big edits, and an ATS keyword check for every job you apply to, because each posting asks for different skills.

How do I know if my resume is ATS friendly?

Open your PDF and select all the text: if it highlights, paste it into a plain text editor and check that your sections, job titles, employers and dates come out in order. Then upload the file to this checker, which flags headings, dates and symbols a parser cannot use. Step-by-step guide: how to check if your resume is ATS-friendly.

What is a resume scanner?

A resume scanner reads your resume file the way an applicant tracking system does and reports what it found: contact details, section headings, job titles, dates and skills. This one also scores the resume out of 100 and lists a fix for each issue, for free and with no signup. To scan your resume against one job posting, use the ATS Score Checker.

How do I test my resume for ATS screening?

Do it in two passes. First, check that the file parses: run this resume checker and the plain-text test (copy the PDF text into Notepad or TextEdit). Second, check the match with the job: paste the posting into the ATS Score Checker and add the missing keywords that are true for you. Also answer the application's screening questions consistently with your resume.

How do I check my resume score for free?

Upload your resume (PDF, DOCX or TXT) or paste its text above and run the check: you get a score out of 100 and a score for each of 8 sections in a few seconds, with no signup. To test your resume against one specific job posting, run the free ATS Score Checker as well.

Is this an AI resume checker?

The score itself comes from fixed rules and word lists, so the same resume always gets the same score and nothing is made up. AI is used only when you click Rewrite it with AI on your weakest bullet; for a full AI rewrite around a job description, use the AI Resume Builder with a free account.

Why does my resume get a different score in another checker?

Each checker measures something different. This resume checker reviews the resume on its own, with no job description. The ATS Score Checker measures how many keywords of one job posting your resume covers, so a well-written resume can score lower there when the posting asks for skills it does not mention. Use both: this one for quality, the ATS check for each job.
