Resume format for freshers: ATS friendly layout and sample

No work experience yet? Recruiters and applicant tracking systems still need the same structure: who you are, what you studied, what you can do and what you have built. Here is the resume format that works for freshers, a filled sample you can copy, and the mistakes that get fresher resumes rejected by an ATS.

The best resume format for freshers

Use a one-page, single-column, reverse-chronological format and put your strongest sections first. For most freshers that order is:

  1. Header — full name, phone, professional email, city, LinkedIn (and GitHub or portfolio for tech roles).
  2. Summary — 2–3 lines: degree, target role, 2–3 core skills. Example: "Computer Science student (B.Tech, 2026) looking for a software developer role, skilled in Java, SQL and React."
  3. Education — degree, college, university, year and CGPA; then Class XII and Class X with board and percentage.
  4. Skills — grouped: programming languages, tools, frameworks, soft skills. Only what you can discuss in an interview.
  5. Projects — 2–3 projects, each with the problem, the tech used and a concrete result.
  6. Internships and training — company, dates, what you did.
  7. Certifications — course, platform, year.
  8. Achievements and activities — hackathons, competitions, clubs, volunteering.

Leave out the photo, date of birth, father's name, marital status, a "Declaration" paragraph and signatures. They take space and give the ATS nothing to match.

How to make a fresher resume ATS friendly

Mirror the job description

If the posting asks for "SQL" and "REST APIs", write those exact words where they are true for you, in Skills and in your project bullets.

Projects carry your experience

Write projects like jobs: what you built, with which tools, and one result (users, speed, accuracy, a grade, a prize).

Keep it to one page

Recruiters scan fresher resumes quickly. One page forces you to keep your best facts only.

Simple layout, text PDF

Single column, standard headings, no tables, icons or photo, and a PDF with real text. See our ATS friendly resume templates.

Common fresher resume mistakes

Build your fresher resume with AI

Upload your college resume or LinkedIn PDF and paste a job description. The AutoApplyMax builder puts your education, projects and internships into an ATS friendly template and rewrites your bullets around the job's keywords. It does not invent experience: if your profile is thin, it tells you what to add instead of making things up. Then run the ATS score checker before you apply.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best resume format for freshers?

A one-page, single-column format with this order: header, short summary, education, skills, projects, internships, certifications and achievements. Put education and projects high because they are your strongest sections.

How long should a fresher resume be?

One page. Only add a second page if you have several relevant internships or publications.

Should a fresher write an objective or a summary?

A 2–3 line summary that states your degree, the role you want and your core skills. Avoid generic objectives like "seeking a challenging position".

Should I include Class X and XII marks?

For Indian campus and entry-level hiring, yes: many recruiters and online forms ask for them. List board, year and percentage under Education, after your degree.

What can a fresher write with no experience?

Projects, internships, training, certifications, hackathons, college clubs and volunteering. Describe them with the tools you used and a concrete result.
