How to write a tech resume that gets past the first read
What tech recruiters and hiring managers check first
A technical resume is usually read twice: once by a recruiter matching it against the job title and must-have tools, and once by an engineer or team lead who wants to know whether you can do the work. The first reader needs the right words in obvious places. The second reader needs evidence: what you shipped, how large it was, and which decisions were yours.
- A headline or most recent title that matches the job family you are applying to.
- The required languages, frameworks and platforms, named exactly as the posting names them.
- Bullets that start with an action and end with a result: faster pages, fewer incidents, a feature customers use, a cost that went down.
- Scope: users, requests, data volume, number of services or devices, team size. Use your own real figures or describe the scale in words.
Formatting a tech resume for applicant tracking systems
Most US and Canadian tech employers run applications through an applicant tracking system (Greenhouse, Lever, Workday, iCIMS and similar). These systems parse text, so keep the layout simple: one column, standard headings (Summary, Experience, Projects, Education, Skills, Certifications), dates on the same line as each job, and no skill bars, icons or text inside images. The samples on this page use single-column templates for that reason.
One page is enough until you have roughly a decade of relevant work; senior engineers, architects and managers can use two pages when the second page carries real, recent content. Save as PDF unless the posting asks for Word, and name the file with your name and the role.
The skills section: group it, then prove it
Group technical skills by type so a reader can scan them in seconds: languages, frameworks and libraries, data stores, cloud and DevOps tooling, testing, and practices such as accessibility, system design or incident response. List only what you could discuss in an interview. Then make sure the most important items also appear inside your experience bullets, because a skill that only lives in a list is a claim, while the same skill inside a bullet is evidence.
Projects, GitHub and portfolios
For new graduates, bootcamp graduates and career changers, a projects section often carries more weight than early job history. Pick two or three projects that resemble the work in the posting, describe the problem, the stack and what the project does today, and link to a repository or live demo that a reviewer can open. Experienced candidates can drop the section or keep one project that shows a skill their jobs do not, such as open-source maintenance or a production side project.
Certifications that matter in tech
Certifications help most where employers use them as filters: cloud (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud), security (CompTIA Security+, CISSP), networking (Cisco CCNA), Kubernetes (CKA, CKAD), IT service management (ITIL) and agile delivery (Professional Scrum Master, Certified ScrumMaster). For software developers they are rarely required; shipped work and code samples count for more. List the exact credential name, the issuer and the year, and leave out expired certifications unless the posting asks for them.
Tailor each application without rewriting from scratch
Keep one complete master resume, then make a short version for each posting: reorder bullets so the most relevant work comes first, mirror the posting's wording for tools you really used, and cut lines that do not help this employer. The AutoApplyMax builder does this from your own resume and a pasted job description, and the free ATS checker shows which posting keywords your resume is missing before you send it.
FAQ
What is the best resume format for tech jobs?
A reverse-chronological, single-column format works best for most tech roles because recruiters and applicant tracking systems both read it easily. Put a short summary at the top, then experience, then projects if you are early in your career, then education, skills and certifications. Use plain section headings and avoid tables, icons and skill bars.
How long should a tech resume be?
One page for students, new graduates and most candidates with under about ten years of experience. Senior engineers, architects and IT managers can use two pages if the second page holds recent, relevant work rather than old jobs or long tool lists. Cut older roles to one or two lines before cutting recent achievements.
Should I include a GitHub or portfolio link on a tech resume?
Yes, if it shows work you would be happy for a hiring manager to read. Put the link in the header next to your email and LinkedIn URL, pin your best repositories, and make sure each has a README that explains what the project does and how to run it. An empty or abandoned profile is better left off.
How do I write a tech resume with no professional experience?
Lead with projects, internships, hackathons, teaching assistant work or freelance jobs, written like experience bullets with a clear stack and result. Add relevant coursework and certifications, keep the summary short and specific about the role you want, and link to code a reviewer can open. The entry-level samples on each role page show this structure.
Are these tech resume examples free to use?
Yes. You can read every sample and adapt its structure and wording to your own experience. The people, employers and schools are fictional, so replace every detail with your own facts and numbers. To build your version in one of these templates, upload your resume to the AutoApplyMax builder and paste the job you want.
