Systems Administrator Resume Examples and Free Templates (Word, PDF)

A systems administrator resume is read by someone who will hand you the keys to their servers, so it has to prove you keep machines patched, backed up and boringly stable. Managers scan for the platforms you run (Windows Server, Active Directory, Entra ID, Linux, VMware or Hyper-V), how many hosts and users depend on you, and what you did when something broke at two in the morning. The samples below follow a help desk technician stepping into a junior sysadmin seat, a mid-level admin running a hybrid estate in Ontario, and a senior engineer who owns infrastructure for a multi-site company.

Every sample on this page is also a free systems administrator resume template: download it as a PDF or an editable Word file, no signup, or open the same template in our builder and let the AI fill it with your own experience.

Systems Administrator Resume Template (Harvard): Entry level Example

Mateo Villanueva, Tier 2 Support Technician ATS-friendly

Mateo's title is still support, so his bullets lead with the server work he was trusted with: patch nights, account cleanup, restore tests and permission redesign. Each one mentions a reviewer or an audit, showing he works safely around production. The Proxmox homelab proves he can run Linux and a domain on his own, which helps a manager take a chance on a first sysadmin hire.

Systems Administrator Resume Template (Consulting): Senior Example

Gregory Achterberg, Senior Systems Administrator ATS-friendly

Gregory's bullets describe infrastructure he designs and defends rather than tickets he closes. Disaster recovery tested live, CIS hardening tied to a penetration test and a change checklist show judgment. The hospital role explains regulated uptime and HIPAA audit work. His earliest job is trimmed to two lines because it mainly shows where his discipline about maintenance windows came from.

How to write each section of a systems administrator resume

Header and headline

Give your name, city, phone, email and LinkedIn. A GitHub repository with sanitized PowerShell, Bash or Ansible code is worth linking; strip hostnames, IP ranges and anything that maps to a former employer's network before you publish it.

Use the headline the posting uses, such as Systems Administrator, Windows Systems Administrator, Linux Administrator or Infrastructure Administrator. If you lean strongly toward one platform, say so in the headline rather than leaving the reader to guess.

Summary

Open with years of experience and the platforms you run day to day: Windows Server and Active Directory, a Linux distribution, the hypervisor and any cloud tenant. Follow with scale in servers, VMs, sites or users, because a sysadmin at a 50-person office and one at a five-plant manufacturer do very different work.

Close with what you are trusted for, such as automation, recovery, security hardening or migrations. Skip filler like hard-working or detail-oriented; your patch and backup results make that case better.

Experience

Strong sysadmin bullets name a system, an action and a consequence. Count hosts, VMs, mailboxes or sites; describe the maintenance window or change process you worked inside; and say what improved, whether fewer outages, faster restores, retired hardware or closed audit findings.

Include one or two incident stories told calmly, such as an expired certificate or a failed storage controller, along with the fix that stopped it happening again. Managers hire administrators who learn from outages, not ones who claim never to have had one.

Skills

Organize skills by area: operating systems, identity and directory, virtualization and storage, cloud, scripting and automation, backup and monitoring. Put the hypervisor and directory first since they appear in nearly every posting for this role.

Be precise about versions and depth. Writing Windows Server 2022 or RHEL 9 reads as current, while listing every Linux distribution you once installed invites questions you may struggle to answer in a technical interview.

Certifications and education

Certifications carry real weight for administrators because they map to platforms. CompTIA Server+ suits people stepping up from support, RHCSA is a hands-on Linux exam that managers respect, and the Azure Administrator Associate fits hybrid shops. Put them above education when your experience is still short.

Diplomas in computer systems technology, associate degrees and bachelor's degrees all lead into this job. Keep education to one line once you have several years running servers, and drop coursework entirely.

Systems Administrator resume summary examples

Entry-level objective: CompTIA Server+ certified technician seeking a junior systems administrator role. Brings supervised experience patching Windows Server, cleaning up Active Directory and testing Veeam restores, plus a Proxmox homelab with a domain controller and Ubuntu file server.

The objective names the target seat and backs it with server tasks already performed, so it reads as a promotion request rather than a wish.

New-grad summary: Systems administration graduate with a co-op term supporting 40 Windows and Linux servers at a logistics firm. Comfortable with Group Policy, DHCP scopes, basic Bash and PowerShell, and VMware snapshots. Keeps careful change notes and asks before touching production.

Server count, both operating systems and a cautious work habit tell a hiring manager this graduate is safe to put near live systems.

Mid-level summary: Systems administrator with six years in hybrid environments: vSphere clusters, Active Directory synced to Entra ID, RHEL application servers and Veeam. Automates patching and account lifecycle with Ansible and PowerShell, and has led Exchange Online and monitoring migrations end to end.

It shows breadth across Windows, Linux and cloud identity, then proves ownership with finished migrations instead of a long tool list.

Senior summary: Senior systems administrator with fourteen years running infrastructure for manufacturing and healthcare. Designs VMware and Azure hosting, leads tested disaster recovery, hardens builds to CIS benchmarks and mentors junior admins. The person teams call when production misbehaves.

Design, recovery, security and mentoring are the four things a senior infrastructure role is hired for, and all four appear in three sentences.

Systems Administrator resume bullet examples: weak vs strong

The strong versions use made-up figures for a fictional candidate. Replace them with your own real numbers, or describe the scope (team size, volume, frequency) if you have none.

Patch management
WeakPatched servers every month.
StrongMoved Windows and RHEL patching into scheduled PowerShell and Ansible jobs with snapshots and service checks, ending manual weekend reboot marathons.

Names both platforms, the tooling and the safeguards, which is what separates routine patching from managed patching.

Backup and recovery
WeakManaged the backups.
StrongRan quarterly Veeam restore tests of the main file share and recorded results, giving auditors proof that backups could be recovered on demand.

A backup only matters if it restores; showing tested recovery and an audit trail is far more convincing than owning the job.

Virtualization
WeakWorked with VMware.
StrongRun a three-host vSphere cluster with 85 VMs, planning capacity and completing host firmware and vCenter upgrades inside approved change windows.

Host and VM counts plus upgrade discipline show the scale and care a hiring manager wants.

Identity
WeakAdministered Active Directory.
StrongConfigured Entra Connect and MFA for every staff account across 30 sites, with setup guides written for frontline workers.

Identity work is about coverage and adoption, so the bullet shows reach and how people were brought along.

Migration
WeakHelped move email to the cloud.
StrongMigrated the remaining on-premises Exchange mailboxes to Exchange Online and decommissioned both Exchange servers without interrupting mail flow.

A clean finish, with old servers actually retired, proves the project was owned rather than assisted.

Security hardening
WeakImproved server security.
StrongHardened Windows and RHEL builds against CIS benchmarks and tiered privileged accounts, closing every finding from an external penetration test.

Pointing to a recognized benchmark and an outside test turns a vague security claim into something verifiable.

Monitoring
WeakSet up server monitoring.
StrongDeployed Zabbix checks for disk space, critical services and backup status, so failed jobs triggered alerts instead of surfacing weeks later.

Explains which signals were watched and the failure mode it removed.

Disaster recovery
WeakWrote a disaster recovery plan.
StrongDesigned a recovery plan with immutable backup copies and a secondary site, restoring the ERP database within the agreed window during a live exercise.

A plan proven in a real exercise carries weight that a document sitting in a folder never will.

Skills for a systems administrator resume

Windows and identity

The core of most sysadmin postings; give each a bullet showing what you changed or fixed.

Linux and virtualization

Name the hypervisor you ran in production and the number of hosts or VMs you managed.

Automation and cloud

Scripting is the line between a junior admin and an experienced one, so pair it with a time saved or an error prevented.

Backup, monitoring and security

These show you protect systems, not just run them; tested restores and closed findings are the evidence.

US vs Canada: systems administrator resumes and pay

United States

In the US, systems administrator titles range from Junior Systems Administrator to Systems Engineer, and the line between them depends on the employer. Federal agencies and defense contractors often require Security+ or a similar approved certification for privileged access, and some positions need an active clearance, so list both near the top if you hold them. Hospitals expect familiarity with HIPAA security controls, and public companies may ask about SOX change and access reviews. Leave off photos, birth dates and marital status.

BLS occupation10th pct.Median90th pct.
Network and Computer Systems Administrators (SOC 15-1244)$62,640$99,130$155,050

Annual wages, US national, BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025.

Canada

Canadian postings use the same titles, sometimes Systems Analyst or Infrastructure Specialist in government. Federal departments and many Ottawa contractors need Reliability Status or Secret clearance, and bilingual English and French ability is a genuine advantage there and in Quebec. Privacy expectations under PIPEDA, plus provincial health privacy laws, mean data residency and access logging come up in interviews. Use Canadian spelling such as centre and licence, and state your work authorization if you are not a citizen or permanent resident.

FAQ

What is the best resume template for a systems administrator?

For online applications, use a single-column template that applicant tracking systems read top to bottom. The systems administrator samples on this page come in four of them: Harvard (shown with the entry-level resume, education can sit first), Modern (mid-level, experience first, a safe default for most employers), Consulting (senior, achievements in bold stand out to the recruiter) and European (fits a long career on one page). Compact and Creative use two columns: they read well to a person, but some older ATS parse them out of order, so keep them for referrals and emails to a hiring manager.

Should a systems administrator resume be one page?

Usually, yes. In the US, one page is the norm for a systems administrator with less than about 10 years of experience, and all six samples on this page fit on one page. A senior systems administrator with a long, relevant track record can use two pages, as long as page one carries the most recent and relevant roles. Canadian employers accept two pages more readily than US ones.

How do I move from help desk into systems administration?

Ask for server tasks at your current job, such as patch nights, account cleanup or restore tests, and write those up as the first bullets under your support title. Add CompTIA Server+ or RHCSA and a homelab with a domain controller and a Linux server. Then target Junior Systems Administrator or Systems Support Analyst postings.

Should I focus my resume on Windows or Linux?

Follow the posting. Windows-heavy roles want Active Directory, Group Policy and Entra ID first; Linux roles want RHEL or Ubuntu, Bash, Ansible and package management. If you genuinely run both, keep both but lead with the one the employer names, and make sure each claim has a bullet behind it.

Is a systems administrator the same as a DevOps or cloud engineer?

They overlap but differ. Sysadmins keep servers, identity, storage and backups healthy, often on premises or hybrid. DevOps and cloud engineers focus more on deployment pipelines, infrastructure as code and cloud services. Ansible, Terraform or Azure work on your resume helps if you want to move toward those roles later.

How do I describe on-call work on a resume?

Mention the rotation and the systems you covered, then give one example of an incident you resolved and the fix that stopped it recurring. Avoid listing every page you answered. Hiring managers want to know you stay calm, communicate clearly and leave the system more stable than you found it.

What should a sysadmin homelab include?

Pick pieces that mirror real jobs: a hypervisor such as Proxmox or Hyper-V, a Windows domain controller with DNS and Group Policy, a Linux server, a backup job you have actually restored, and monitoring. Describe it in one or two lines and be ready to explain every design choice in an interview.

Are these systems administrator resume templates free?

Yes. Every sample on this page downloads free as a PDF (exact design, selectable text) or as an editable Word .docx file, with no account. If you want the AI to fill a template with your own experience and tailor it to a job posting, the free AutoApplyMax plan includes 1 tailored resume a month.
