DevOps Engineer Resume Examples: Entry Level, Mid Level and Senior

A DevOps engineer resume is read by people who have been paged at 3 a.m., so it needs to prove you make systems easier to ship and harder to break. Hiring managers look for the cloud, container and pipeline tools you run in production, then for results: faster deploys, fewer incidents, lower cloud bills and teams able to release without waiting on you. The samples below cover a junior engineer coming from IT operations, a mid-level platform engineer and a senior lead who owns reliability across many teams, with notes on homelab and infrastructure-as-code repositories for people still building experience.

Entry level

Liam Fitzgerald-Nwosu: Systems Administrator

Liam has no DevOps title yet, so his sysadmin bullets show the DevOps mindset: automation, code review for infrastructure, monitoring and runbooks. His homelab repository proves he can run Kubernetes and Terraform outside a tutorial, and his CKA backs that up with a hands-on exam. Both certifications appear because they matter more at this stage than later.

How to write each section of a devOps engineer resume

Header and repositories

Include name, city, email, phone, LinkedIn and a GitHub or GitLab link. For DevOps, the most useful public repository is an infrastructure project: Terraform modules, Helm charts, Ansible roles or a documented homelab. A clear README with architecture notes matters more than stars.

Never publish employer code, keys or internal hostnames. Clean any personal repository of secrets before linking it.

Summary

State your years of experience, the cloud you know best, your orchestration and IaC tools, and the type of environment, such as regulated fintech, high-traffic ecommerce or government. Postings often split between Kubernetes-heavy platform roles and pipeline-focused build and release roles, so lead with the one that fits.

Mention on-call and incident leadership if you have them; many teams look for that explicitly.

Experience

Good DevOps bullets describe the change you made to the platform and its effect: deploy frequency, pipeline time, incidents, recovery time, cloud cost, audit outcomes or developer self-service. Name the tool in the same line so a technical reader can judge depth.

Avoid bullets that only list tools you maintained. Instead, show what was broken or slow before and what is true now. If you came from systems administration or support, frame that work around automation and reliability.

Skills

Group skills by cloud, containers and orchestration, infrastructure as code, CI/CD, observability, scripting and security. Name specific services, such as EKS, Lambda or Azure DevOps, when a posting is cloud-specific.

Keep the list honest. Interviewers in this field often ask you to debug a cluster or explain a Terraform state problem live, so list only tools you have run in production or in a serious homelab.

Education and certifications

Degrees in computer science, IT or systems technology are common, but many DevOps engineers come from operations or development without one. List your highest relevant education briefly.

Certifications carry real weight here, especially hands-on ones like the CKA and cloud professional-level exams. Put current certifications in their own section with the issuer, and drop expired ones unless the posting asks for them.

DevOps Engineer resume summary examples

Entry-level objective: IT operations professional seeking a junior DevOps engineer role on a team running Kubernetes in production. Brings two years of Linux administration, Ansible and CI automation, a public homelab built with Terraform and Argo CD, and the CKA certification.

It names the target environment and gives proof a hiring manager can inspect, starting with the public repository.

New-grad summary: Computer science graduate with a cloud infrastructure co-op, where the work covered Terraform modules, GitHub Actions pipelines and Prometheus alerts for a production SaaS platform. Comfortable in Linux, Python and Docker, and eager to join an on-call rotation with mentorship.

It shows production exposure during school and states willingness for on-call, a common hesitation point for junior candidates.

Mid-level summary: DevOps engineer with six years running AWS and Kubernetes platforms for fintech and ecommerce. Builds GitOps delivery, Terraform modules and CI that developers rely on, leads incident reviews and owns SOC 2 infrastructure evidence. Known for making deployment boring and cloud bills smaller.

Cloud, orchestration, delivery style, compliance and cost all appear quickly, matching what mid-level DevOps postings ask for.

Senior summary: Platform engineering lead with 13 years of infrastructure experience in SaaS and healthcare. Leads teams that own Kubernetes, CI/CD and observability, built an internal developer platform and introduced SLOs company-wide. Experienced with HIPAA and FedRAMP environments and multi-cloud governance.

Scope, leadership, strategic initiatives and regulated-environment experience separate a lead from a strong individual contributor.

DevOps Engineer resume bullet examples: weak vs strong

The strong versions use made-up figures for a fictional candidate. Replace them with your own real numbers, or describe the scope (team size, volume, frequency) if you have none.

CI/CD
WeakMaintained CI/CD pipelines.
StrongRebuilt CI in GitHub Actions with reusable workflows and caching, cutting pipeline time from 25 minutes to eight across 35 services.

A before and after time across a stated number of services shows real impact on developer speed.

Kubernetes
WeakWorked with Kubernetes clusters.
StrongMigrated 35 services to EKS with Helm and Argo CD, letting product teams deploy independently several times a day.

Shows the tools, the scale and the organizational outcome, which matters more than the cluster itself.

Infrastructure as code
WeakWrote Terraform code.
StrongCreated Terraform modules for networking, databases and IAM used by every new service, ending manual console changes and audit findings.

Reusable modules adopted by others prove you built a standard, not one-off scripts.

Monitoring and incidents
WeakSet up monitoring and alerts.
StrongAdded SLO-based alerts in Datadog for the payments API and ran blameless reviews whose fixes reduced repeat pages for that service.

Ties observability to fewer incidents, the result on-call engineers and managers care about.

Cloud cost
WeakReduced cloud costs.
StrongCut monthly AWS spend by about $9,000 by rightsizing instances, buying savings plans and deleting unused snapshots and volumes.

Specific actions plus a dollar figure make a cost claim believable and easy to discuss in an interview.

Security and compliance
WeakHelped with security compliance.
StrongAdded image scanning, secrets in Vault and least-privilege IAM roles, then produced the infrastructure evidence that passed a SOC 2 audit.

Names concrete controls and the audit result instead of general security involvement.

Automation
WeakAutomated server tasks.
StrongWrote Ansible playbooks to patch and harden 120 Linux servers, turning a multi-day manual process into a reviewed, repeatable evening job.

Scale and time saved show why the automation mattered, and review shows good engineering habits.

Platform leadership
WeakLed the DevOps team.
StrongLed seven platform engineers building golden-path templates that cut new service setup from two weeks of tickets to under a day.

Leadership shown through a platform outcome that other teams felt is more convincing than a title.

US vs Canada: devOps engineer resumes and pay

United States

In the US, DevOps engineer is an unregulated title. Government and defense contractors often require US citizenship and a security clearance, and experience with FedRAMP, CMMC or GovCloud environments is valuable there. Healthcare and finance roles often ask for HIPAA, PCI DSS or SOC 2 experience, so name the frameworks you have supported. Many postings list cloud certifications as preferred. Leave out photo, age and marital status, and answer visa sponsorship questions honestly in the application form.

The BLS does not publish a separate occupation for devOps engineers, so we show no US wage figure rather than borrow a different job's numbers.

Canada

In Canada, engineer is a regulated title in every province, and some regulators have challenged its use in software job titles; enforcement varies by province, and many employers still use DevOps engineer as the official title. Keep your employer's title on job entries, but avoid calling yourself a professional engineer without a license. Data residency comes up often in public sector, health and Quebec work because of provincial privacy laws, so experience with Canadian cloud regions is worth mentioning. Federal roles may require security screening and French.

FAQ

Can I get a DevOps job without DevOps experience?

Yes, many DevOps engineers start in systems administration, IT support, QA or development. Show automation and reliability work from those roles, then add a homelab or infrastructure repository and a hands-on certification such as the CKA. Junior DevOps roles are fewer than senior ones, so related titles like cloud support or build engineer can be stepping stones.

Should I link a homelab on my resume?

Yes, if it is documented and resembles production practice: infrastructure as code, monitoring, backups and a clear README. A homelab shows initiative and lets interviewers see how you think. Keep it free of secrets and personal data, and be ready to explain your design choices.

Which certification should a DevOps engineer get first?

It depends on the jobs you want. The CKA is a strong signal for Kubernetes-heavy roles, while an AWS, Azure or Google Cloud associate certification fits cloud-focused roles. Terraform Associate is quick and useful. Check which ones appear in postings you are targeting, and pair any credential with real projects.

How do I show on-call experience on a resume?

Describe your role in incidents, the runbooks or alerts you created, and what changed after reviews. Avoid listing every outage. One or two bullets that show you reduce repeat incidents and support teammates during rotations tell a hiring manager you are safe to put on call.

Is DevOps engineer the same as site reliability engineer?

They overlap. DevOps roles often focus on CI/CD, infrastructure as code and developer enablement, while SRE roles emphasize reliability targets, SLOs and incident engineering, often with more coding. Read the posting and adjust your summary to the emphasis, using the same tools and evidence in different order.
