Arjun Mehta: Software Developer Co-op
Arjun has no full-time job yet, so his two co-op terms carry the page and each bullet names a real deliverable that shipped. The projects section fills the gap a new grad always has: proof of building something end to end. Note the Canadian title choice: his co-op titles say Developer, and his summary describes a software engineering degree rather than calling him an engineer.

Arjun Mehta · Waterloo, ON · arjun.mehta@email.example · (519) 555-0147
Summary
Software engineering graduate with two backend co-op terms shipping Python and Go services to production. Comfortable writing tests first, reading unfamiliar codebases and owning small features from ticket to deploy. Looking for a new-grad backend or platform role on a team that values code review and on-call learning.
Experience
Software Developer Co-op, Cobaltline Systems · Waterloo, ON · May 2025 — Aug 2025
- Built a Go service that validates partner inventory files before import, catching malformed rows that previously failed nightly jobs and paged the on-call engineer.
- Added pagination and query indexes to a PostgreSQL-backed REST endpoint, cutting p95 response time from 1.8 seconds to 420 milliseconds on the largest customer accounts.
- Wrote 60 table-driven unit tests and a GitHub Actions workflow that runs them on every pull request for a service that had no automated checks.
Backend Developer Co-op, Tidewater Health Tech · Toronto, ON · Sep 2024 — Dec 2024
- Implemented three FastAPI endpoints for appointment reminders, including input validation and audit logging required by the clinic data-retention policy.
- Fixed 14 bugs from the support queue, writing a regression test for each before the fix so the same issue could not ship twice.
Projects
Transit Delay Tracker (open source)
- Built a TypeScript and React dashboard over a public GTFS feed, with a Python ingestion job in Docker that stores six months of delay history in PostgreSQL.
Capstone: Peer Tutoring Scheduler
- Led a four-person team that delivered a scheduling app used by 120 students during the winter term, owning the API, database schema and deployment.
Education
BASc, Software Engineering (Co-op), Maplecrest University (2026)
Skills

Marcus Delgado: Software Engineer II
Marcus is at the stage where hiring managers want ownership, not task lists. Every bullet shows a system he changed and what improved: duplicate refunds gone, deploys faster, fewer pages. The skills list is grouped around one coherent backend stack instead of every language he has touched, which makes him easy to slot into a Java or Kotlin team.

Marcus Delgado · Austin, TX · marcus.delgado@email.example · (512) 555-0163
Summary
Backend software engineer with six years building payment and billing services in Java and Kotlin on AWS. Known for turning flaky, hard-to-change systems into well-tested services with clear ownership. Recent work covers event-driven design with Kafka, idempotent APIs and incident reduction through better observability.
Experience
Software Engineer II, Brightfield Payments · Austin, TX · Mar 2023 — Present
- Redesigned the refund pipeline as Kafka-driven Spring Boot services with idempotency keys, eliminating duplicate refunds that had required manual finance cleanup each month.
- Led migration of 11 services from EC2 to ECS with Terraform modules, shortening deploys from about 40 minutes to 9 and removing hand-edited server configs.
- Introduced Datadog tracing and SLO dashboards for the checkout path, helping the team cut paging incidents from roughly eight a month to two.
- Mentored two junior engineers through their first on-call rotations and reviewed an average of 15 pull requests a week across three repositories.
Software Engineer, Pinecrest Labs · Dallas, TX · Jul 2020 — Feb 2023
- Built invoice generation APIs in Java serving 3,000 business customers, including PDF rendering, tax line calculation and retry-safe email delivery.
- Replaced a nightly batch job with an event-based sync to the CRM, so account changes appeared for sales within minutes instead of the next morning.
- Raised unit and integration test coverage on the billing module from 35% to 78%, which let the team release weekly instead of monthly.

Danielle Okafor: Staff Software Engineer
At staff level the resume has to show influence beyond your own code. Danielle's bullets mix architecture, cost, standards adopted by other teams and coaching, while still naming Go, Kafka and Kubernetes so it is obvious she is hands-on. Her earliest job is trimmed to two lines because nobody hiring a staff engineer needs detail from 2013.

How to write each section of a software engineer resume
Header and links
Put your name, city and province or state, email, phone, GitHub and LinkedIn on one or two lines. Only link a GitHub profile if the pinned repositories are your own work with a readable README; an empty profile hurts more than no link. A personal site is worth including when it hosts a project demo or technical writing.
Skip a full street address and photo. If you need sponsorship or hold a security clearance, those details belong in the application form or a short line near the bottom, not in the header.
Summary
Write two or three lines that state your level, your main language and platform, and the domain you know best: payments, health data, developer tooling, games. A hiring manager for a Go infrastructure team and one for a React product team want different signals, so adjust the first line to the posting.
Leave out passion statements. Replace them with the kind of problems you are good at, such as scaling, migrations, reliability or shipping product features quickly.
Experience and projects
Each bullet should say what you built or changed, with which technology, at what scale, and what improved. Useful measures for engineers are latency, error rate, deploy frequency, incidents, cost, users or requests served, and time saved for other teams. If you lack numbers, describe the before and after state plainly.
New grads and career changers should add a projects section with two strong projects instead of five tutorials. Name the stack, link the repository and mention anything real about it: users, tests, deployment, a contribution merged upstream.
Skills
Group skills into languages, frameworks, data stores and cloud or tooling, and list only what you could discuss in a technical interview. Put the posting's primary language first if you know it well. Rating bars and percentages next to languages tell a reader nothing, so leave them out.
Repeat the important tools inside your experience bullets too. A skill that only appears in a list looks weaker than one shown in a shipped feature.
Education and certifications
List your degree, school and graduation year; include GPA only if it is strong and you graduated recently. Bootcamp graduates should list the bootcamp with its capstone project. Relevant coursework helps new grads when it matches the role, such as distributed systems, databases or operating systems.
Cloud and Kubernetes certifications are a plus for platform, DevOps-leaning and consulting roles, but they rarely replace shipped work. Place them below education unless the posting asks for them by name.
Software Engineer resume summary examples
Entry-level objective: Computer science graduate seeking a junior backend role where I can grow on a team that ships Python or Go services weekly. Brings a capstone API in production use, an open-source contribution to a testing library and solid SQL fundamentals.
An objective works for a first job only when it names the kind of team and stack you want and backs it with concrete proof.
New-grad summary: Software developer with two co-op terms on backend teams, shipping FastAPI and Go endpoints, writing tests for every fix and deploying through GitHub Actions. Strongest in API design, PostgreSQL query tuning and debugging production logs alongside senior engineers.
It reads like experience, not hope: co-op work, named tools and the specific habits a team lead wants in a new hire.
Mid-level summary: Backend engineer with six years on payment systems in Java, Kotlin and Kafka on AWS. Owns services end to end, from design doc to on-call, and has reduced paging incidents and deploy times on every team joined. Looking for a product team where reliability is a feature.
Domain, stack and the type of impact sit in the first two lines, which is exactly what a recruiter screens for at this level.
Senior summary: Staff engineer with 13 years building distributed logistics and healthcare platforms. Writes the architecture that several teams build on, keeps cloud costs proportional to growth and coaches senior engineers through design reviews. Still writes production Go and Python every week.
It signals scope across teams first, then confirms hands-on coding so the reader does not mistake the candidate for a pure manager.
Software Engineer resume bullet examples: weak vs strong
The strong versions use made-up figures for a fictional candidate. Replace them with your own real numbers, or describe the scope (team size, volume, frequency) if you have none.
Names the framework, the design choice that mattered and the business problem it solved, instead of just a team name.
A before and after number plus the actual technique lets an interviewer ask good follow-up questions.
Shows why the tests mattered and that you changed team process, not only your own code.
Gives the count, the tooling and the measurable outcome of a migration that otherwise sounds like busywork.
Everyone is on call; the strong version shows you made on-call better for the next person.
Architecture claims need scale and durability evidence; responsibility alone says nothing about results.
Connects front-end work to accessibility and to a support metric product managers track.
Mentoring is credible when the outcome belongs to the people you mentored.

US vs Canada: software engineer resumes and pay
United States
In the US, Software Engineer is an unregulated job title, so use whatever title your employer gave you. Defense, aerospace and some government contractors require US citizenship or an active security clearance; if you hold one, state the clearance level near the end of the resume. Roles touching export-controlled technology may require US person status under ITAR. If you will need H-1B or other visa sponsorship, you do not have to mention it on the resume, but answer the application question honestly. Leave out photo, age and marital status.
| BLS occupation | 10th pct. | Median | 90th pct. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software Developers (SOC 15-1252) closest BLS category | $82,460 | $135,980 | $214,670 |
Annual wages, US national, BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025.
Canada
Engineer is a protected title in Canada, regulated by provincial bodies such as Professional Engineers Ontario, the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec and APEGA in Alberta. Unless you hold a P.Eng. or are registered as an engineer-in-training, avoid presenting yourself as a Software Engineer in your headline or summary; many Canadian postings use Software Developer for this reason, and enforcement varies by province. Co-op terms are expected on new-grad resumes. Roles in Quebec or with the federal government may ask for French. Mention work permit status if you are not a citizen or permanent resident.
| Job Bank occupation | Low | Median | High |

FAQ
Should a software engineer resume be one page?
One page is the norm for new grads and engineers with under about seven years of experience. Senior and staff engineers can use two pages if the second page carries real, recent work. Cut old jobs and long skill lists before you cut detail from your most recent role.
Do I need a projects section if I already have work experience?
Not usually. Once you have two or more years of professional work, projects only earn space if they show something your jobs do not, such as a popular open-source library, a different language or a product with real users. New grads and bootcamp graduates should keep one.
How do I show impact when my company keeps metrics private?
Use relative or approximate figures, such as cutting deploy time from hours to minutes or handling twice the traffic. You can also describe scale without revenue, like requests per second, number of services or teams served. Never invent numbers you cannot explain in an interview.
Should I list every programming language I have used?
No. List the languages you could pass a coding interview in, and put the one the posting asks for first. Ten languages with no context makes a reader suspect shallow knowledge. Older or rarely used languages can be dropped entirely.
Can I call myself a software engineer in Canada?
Engineer is a regulated title in every province. Your employer's official job title can appear as it is, but presenting yourself as an engineer without a P.Eng. or engineer-in-training registration can draw complaints from the provincial regulator. Software Developer is a safe headline if you are not registered.
