How to write each section of a web developer resume
Header, portfolio and GitHub
Add your portfolio or personal site and GitHub link next to your email, phone and city. For web developers, live work matters most: link two or three sites you built, and say what you did on each if it was a team project.
Make sure linked sites still work and load quickly, because reviewers will open them. If client work has since been redesigned by someone else, link an archived version or a case study with screenshots instead.
Summary
State your years of experience, the type of web work you do (marketing sites, ecommerce, web apps, CMS builds), your main stack and your setting, such as agency, in-house or freelance. Web developer postings vary from WordPress to React applications, so make the fit obvious.
Mention strengths that matter in web work, such as performance, accessibility, SEO-friendly builds or client communication.
Experience
Write bullets about sites and features you built and what improved: page speed, conversions, editor independence, accessibility compliance, fewer bugs or support requests. Name the framework or platform in the same bullet.
Freelancers should combine client work into one entry with their strongest projects and results. Agency developers can mention the number of launches and the types of clients to show range without naming confidential clients.
Skills
Group skills into front end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, frameworks), back end and CMS (PHP, Node, WordPress, Shopify, headless CMS), and tools and practices (Git, testing, performance, accessibility, analytics). List the CMS platforms you know, since many postings filter by them.
Skip progress bars and ratings. Interviewers will test the skills you list, often with a take-home task or live coding.
Education and training
Web developers come from computer science degrees, college diplomas, bootcamps and self-teaching. List your highest relevant training briefly and add a projects section if your work experience is light.
Certificates such as the Meta Front-End Developer certificate can help career changers, but live sites and code carry more weight. Accessibility credentials like the IAAP Web Accessibility Specialist stand out for public sector and enterprise roles.
Web Developer resume summary examples
Entry-level objective: Career changer from restaurant management seeking a junior web developer role at an agency or in-house marketing team. Brings a full-stack bootcamp certificate, six live client sites built on WordPress and React, and a habit of testing every launch for accessibility.
It names a realistic target and points to live work a reviewer can open right away.
New-grad summary: Web developer with a computer science diploma and a co-op building responsive pages and components in React and TypeScript. Comfortable with Git, REST APIs, Figma handoff and basic accessibility testing, with a portfolio of three deployed projects.
It lists a practical stack and deployed proof instead of coursework alone.
Mid-level summary: Front-end web developer with five years at a digital agency, building marketing sites and ecommerce stores in React, Next.js, Shopify and headless CMS platforms. Known for accessible, fast builds and bilingual English and French sites that editors can manage themselves.
Setting, platforms, strengths and a distinctive language skill fit in two sentences.
Senior summary: Senior full-stack web developer with 11 years in ecommerce and media platforms. Leads storefront architecture, performance and component libraries, partners with SEO, design and marketing, and mentors developers. Comfortable from React front ends to Node and GraphQL services.
It shows ownership of a platform and cross-team influence, plus full-stack range, which senior web roles require.
Web Developer resume bullet examples: weak vs strong
The strong versions use made-up figures for a fictional candidate. Replace them with your own real numbers, or describe the scope (team size, volume, frequency) if you have none.
Count, platforms and a client-friendly handoff show complete delivery, not just coding.
Names a recognized performance metric and ties it to revenue.
Standard, deadline and testing method make the claim credible and specific.
Shows an outcome for the people who use the site daily, not just the setup.
Architecture change plus business benefits shows senior-level ownership.
Migrations often hurt search traffic, so preventing that is a meaningful result.
Shows quality practices that protect the revenue-critical paths of an online store.
Email coding is tricky, and the strong version shows both technical and accessibility value.

US vs Canada: web developer resumes and pay
United States
Web developer is an unregulated job title in the US. Website accessibility is a legal risk area, with lawsuits brought under the ADA and federal sites bound by Section 508, so WCAG experience is valuable. Agencies and in-house teams often hire on contract, and contract roles may be listed as 1099 or W-2. Government web work can require citizenship or a background check. Link live work in your header, and leave out photo, age and marital status.
| BLS occupation | 10th pct. | Median | 90th pct. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Web Developers (SOC 15-1254) | $48,100 | $92,650 | $162,290 |
Annual wages, US national, BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025.
Canada
In Canada, web developer is unregulated, and developer is safer than engineer as a headline because engineer is a protected title. Accessibility rules vary: Ontario's AODA requires many organizations to meet WCAG 2.0 AA, and federal organizations follow federal standards. Federal institutions must publish in English and French, and businesses serving Quebec face French-language requirements under the Charter of the French Language, so bilingual site experience stands out. Mention work permit status if relevant.
| Job Bank occupation | Low | Median | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Web Developer (NOC 21234) | $21.48/h | $38.46/h | $57.16/h |

FAQ
Is web developer the same as software engineer?
They overlap, but web developer roles usually focus on websites, ecommerce, CMS platforms and front-end work, often for marketing or content teams. Software engineer roles tend to focus on applications, services and system design. Use the title that fits your work and the posting, and adjust your summary accordingly.
Should I list WordPress if I also know React?
Yes, if the jobs you want use it. Many agencies, nonprofits and small businesses run on WordPress, and custom theme or block development is a real skill. For product companies using React, lead with React and keep WordPress lower. Tailor the order to each posting.
How do I show client work I cannot share?
Describe the type of client, your role and the result without naming the company if your contract or agency forbids it. Use a case study with sanitized screenshots, or rebuild a similar feature in a personal project. Never publish client code or credentials.
Do I need a degree to become a web developer?
No. Many web developers come from bootcamps, college diplomas or self-teaching. What matters is live work, clean code and evidence you can collaborate with designers and clients. Some larger employers and government roles still prefer degrees, so check postings and highlight equivalent experience.
How important is accessibility on a web developer resume?
Very. Accessible markup, keyboard navigation, color contrast and screen reader testing are part of professional web work, and legal requirements apply in many organizations. If you have fixed accessibility issues or met a WCAG standard, include it in a bullet with the standard named.
