Priya Raghunathan: QA Analyst Co-op
Priya has two co-op terms and no full-time job yet, so each bullet names a concrete artifact: test cases written, defects logged with evidence, a small automated suite running in CI. Her bilingual app testing is a useful detail for Ottawa-area employers. The open-source project shows she can read someone else's test code, which many junior candidates never demonstrate.

Summary
Software testing graduate with a QA co-op term on a web banking team and a second on a mobile app team. Writes clear test cases, logs reproducible defects and has built small Playwright and Postman suites that run in CI. Looking for a junior QA analyst role on a product team that pairs testers with developers.
Experience
QA Analyst Co-op, Rideau Ledger Software · Ottawa, ON · Jan 2026 — Apr 2026
- Wrote and executed 140 test cases in TestRail for a bill-payment redesign, covering edge cases around holidays, cut-off times and duplicate submissions.
- Logged 38 defects in Jira with steps, screenshots and network traces; developers closed most of them without needing a follow-up question.
- Automated 22 smoke tests in Playwright and TypeScript that ran on every pull request through GitHub Actions in under eight minutes.
Software Tester Co-op, Lakeview Mobile Studio · Gatineau, QC · May 2025 — Aug 2025

Javier Montoya: QA Automation Engineer
Javier is past the point where running test cases is enough. His bullets show he chose tools, rebuilt a slow suite, protected APIs with contract tests and moved testing earlier in the sprint. Each line names the framework and the change in release speed or risk, which is what a hiring manager for an automation role screens for.

Javier Montoya · Austin, TX · javier.montoya@email.example · (512) 555-0174
Summary
QA automation engineer with five years testing SaaS web apps and REST APIs. Builds maintainable Cypress and REST Assured suites, wires them into Jenkins and GitHub Actions, and works with developers to make features testable before code is written. Comfortable owning release sign-off for a product area.
Experience
QA Automation Engineer, Brazos Field Software · Austin, TX · Feb 2023 — Present
- Replaced a brittle Selenium suite with 310 Cypress tests using page objects and API-seeded data, cutting nightly regression time from about four hours to 35 minutes.
- Built a REST Assured contract test layer for 60 endpoints that blocks merges when response schemas change without a version bump.
- Introduced risk-based test planning in sprint refinement, so the riskiest stories got test scenarios before development started instead of during release week.
- Ran JMeter load tests ahead of a large customer onboarding, finding a connection-pool limit that would have caused timeouts at expected peak traffic.
QA Analyst, Mesquite Health Portal · San Antonio, TX · Jun 2021 — Jan 2023
- Executed functional and regression testing for a patient portal, including role-based access checks for patients, caregivers and clinic staff.
- Wrote SQL queries to verify data written by appointment and billing workflows, catching two mapping errors that front-end checks could not see.
- Automated 90 high-value regression cases in Selenium and Java, freeing roughly two days of manual testing from every release cycle.

Grace Adeyemi-Hart: QA Engineering Lead
Grace's resume is about the quality system, not her personal test count. Leadership bullets cover team size, strategy, pipeline speed and escaped defects, while the SDET role proves she can still write a framework herself. Her first job is reduced to two lines, keeping the page focused on the last eight years.

Grace Adeyemi-Hart · Raleigh, NC · grace.adeyemihart@email.example · (919) 555-0136
Summary
QA lead with eleven years in software quality, the last five leading testers and SDETs across web, mobile and payments teams. Designs test strategies, quality gates and tooling that let teams release often without trading away stability. Hands-on with Playwright, Python and CI pipelines, and comfortable presenting release risk to product and engineering leadership.
Experience
QA Engineering Lead, Tarheel Commerce Systems · Raleigh, NC · Mar 2021 — Present
- Lead a team of seven QA engineers and SDETs supporting four product squads, setting shared standards for test design, flaky-test handling and release sign-off.
- Designed a layered test strategy that moved most coverage from UI tests to API and component tests, shrinking the main pipeline from 70 minutes to 18.
- Built a defect review that traces every production bug to the missing test layer, cutting escaped high-severity defects from about six a quarter to one.
- Hired and onboarded four engineers, creating a 30-day plan that had each new hire shipping automated tests in their first sprint.
Senior SDET, Piedmont Payments Group · Charlotte, NC · Jan 2017 — Feb 2021
- Built a Python and pytest framework for card-payment APIs, with synthetic test data that respected PCI rules and ran in isolated Docker environments.
- Created Appium suites for iOS and Android checkout flows, running on a device cloud for every release candidate.
- Partnered with developers to add test hooks and feature flags, making previously untestable retry and timeout paths verifiable in CI.
QA Analyst, Sandhill Learning Tech · Durham, NC · Jun 2015 — Dec 2016
- Tested a learning management platform used by school districts, including accessibility checks with screen readers and keyboard-only navigation.
- Wrote the team's first regression checklist and Selenium smoke suite, which became the basis of its release process.

How to write each section of a QA engineer resume
Header and title
Put your name, city, email, phone, LinkedIn and, if it has real test code in it, a GitHub link. A public repository with a small, well-structured automation framework and a README explaining how to run it is one of the most persuasive things a QA candidate can share.
Use a headline that matches the posting's level and focus: QA Analyst, QA Automation Engineer, SDET or QA Lead. Those titles signal different expectations about coding, so do not label yourself an SDET if you mostly run manual test cases.
Summary
State your years in testing, the product types you test (web, mobile, APIs, data pipelines, embedded) and your main automation stack. Then add the result you are known for, such as shorter regression cycles, fewer escaped defects or a framework other teams adopted.
If you are moving from manual to automation testing, say so directly and name the language and framework you now use, backed by a project or recent work.
Experience
Describe what you tested, how, and what changed. Useful measures include suite run time, number of automated cases, flaky-test rate, escaped defects, release frequency and hours of manual regression removed. Mention the test layers you worked in: unit support, API, contract, UI, performance or accessibility.
Avoid lists of duties like executing test cases or attending stand-ups. Replace them with the decisions you made: what you chose to automate, what you dropped, how you handled test data and which risks you flagged before release.
Skills
Group skills into automation frameworks, programming languages, API and performance tools, CI and environments, and test management tools. Put the posting's framework first if you know it, and only list tools you could set up from scratch in an interview exercise.
Testing techniques count as skills too: boundary value analysis, equivalence partitioning, risk-based testing and exploratory charters show you understand test design, not only tools.
Education, certifications and projects
List your degree or diploma with the year. Computer science, information systems and college programming diplomas are all common paths, and many testers come from other fields entirely, so a bootcamp or self-taught route is fine when backed by work.
ISTQB Foundation is widely recognized and helps early-career candidates; advanced ISTQB levels or ASQ's software quality credential carry weight for leads. Junior candidates without much experience should add one project: a test suite against a public demo app or merged test contributions to an open-source project.
QA Engineer resume summary examples
Entry-level objective: Detail-focused computer programming graduate seeking a junior QA analyst role on an agile web or mobile team. Brings a co-op term of manual and API testing, ISTQB Foundation certification and a small Playwright suite running in GitHub Actions.
Names the role, the team type and three pieces of evidence, so the objective reads as a plan rather than a wish.
New-grad summary: QA analyst with two co-op terms testing banking and mobile booking apps. Writes reproducible bug reports, designs test cases from acceptance criteria and has automated smoke checks in Playwright and Postman. Strong eye for edge cases in dates, currencies and bilingual content.
Shows the habits a test lead values in a new hire and points to a specific strength instead of a generic attention to detail.
Mid-level summary: QA automation engineer with five years on SaaS products, building Cypress, Selenium and REST Assured suites that run in Jenkins and GitHub Actions. Shortens regression cycles, adds contract tests to catch API breaks early and owns release sign-off for a product area.
Frameworks, pipeline and type of impact appear in two sentences, matching how automation roles are usually screened.
Senior summary: QA engineering lead with eleven years in software quality and five leading testers and SDETs across several teams. Sets test strategy, quality gates and flaky-test policy, and turns production defect data into concrete testing changes. Still writes Python and Playwright code when the team needs a framework fixed.
Leads with scope and strategy, then confirms hands-on skill so the reader sees a working lead rather than a pure manager.
QA Engineer resume bullet examples: weak vs strong
The strong versions use made-up figures for a fictional candidate. Replace them with your own real numbers, or describe the scope (team size, volume, frequency) if you have none.
Gives the framework, the design approach and the time saved, which is the real reason teams fund automation.
Shows exploratory testing as a deliberate technique with results, not a fallback when automation is missing.
Moves from using a tool to building a safeguard that protects other teams from breaking changes.
Good bug reports save developer time, and saying so turns a routine task into evidence of quality.
Pipeline speed decides whether developers wait for tests or ignore them; the number makes that visible.
Ties the test to a business event and a specific technical finding instead of a vague activity.
Shows influence on how the team builds software, which separates engineers from test executors.
A team size plus an outcome owned by the team is far more convincing than a title alone.

Skills for a QA engineer resume
Automation frameworks
- Playwright
- Cypress
- Selenium WebDriver
- Appium
- pytest
- JUnit or TestNG
- Cucumber
Name one or two you know deeply; a long list without project evidence looks like keyword stuffing.
Languages and data
- Java
- Python
- JavaScript
- TypeScript
- SQL
- Bash
SQL is worth listing even for UI-focused testers because data checks catch defects screens hide.
API and performance
- Postman
- REST Assured
- JMeter
- k6
- Charles or Fiddler
- Contract testing
Mention what you measured or protected, such as response schemas, throughput or error rates.
Process and tooling
- Jira
- TestRail or Zephyr
- Jenkins
- GitHub Actions
- Docker
- Git
- Agile and Scrum
Show where your tests run and who sees the results, not only which tools exist on the team.
Soft skills, and how to prove them
- Clear written communication: Point to bug reports developers could act on without questions, or test summaries that product managers used to decide on a release.
- Skepticism and curiosity: Describe a defect you found by questioning an assumption, such as time zones, retries or unusual user roles.
- Collaboration with developers: Show a time you paired on testability, added test hooks together or reviewed a pull request for missing cases.
- Prioritization under deadlines: Explain how you chose what to test when time was short, and what risk you documented for the release decision.
- Teaching and mentoring: Mention testers or developers you trained on a framework, and what they built or automated afterward.
Certifications and licenses
- ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL) (ISTQB, through member boards such as ASTQB in the US): The most widely recognized entry credential in software testing; it covers vocabulary, test design techniques and the test process.
- ISTQB Advanced Level Test Automation Engineering (ISTQB): Fits mid-level automation engineers who design frameworks and need to show architecture knowledge beyond writing scripts.
- ISTQB Advanced Level Test Manager (ISTQB): Relevant for leads planning testing across teams, estimating effort and reporting quality risk to management.
- Certified Software Quality Engineer (CSQE) (ASQ (American Society for Quality)): A broader quality credential with experience requirements; more common in regulated industries such as medical devices and aerospace.
US vs Canada: QA engineer resumes and pay
United States
In the US, QA Engineer and SDET are unregulated titles, so use what your employer called the role. Postings in medical devices, finance and defense often ask for experience with validation documentation, FDA-regulated software processes or audit trails, so name those settings if you have worked in them. Some federal contractor roles require US citizenship or a clearance; list an active clearance near the end. Leave out photo, age and marital status, and answer sponsorship questions in the application form rather than on the resume.
| BLS occupation | 10th pct. | Median | 90th pct. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software Quality Assurance Analysts and Testers (SOC 15-1253) | $61,440 | $104,300 | $167,010 |
Annual wages, US national, BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025.
Canada
Engineer is a protected title in Canada, regulated provincially by bodies such as Professional Engineers Ontario and the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec, so many Canadian employers post QA Analyst, Software Tester or Quality Assurance Specialist instead. If you are not a licensed engineer, use one of those as your headline and keep an employer's official title as it was. College diplomas with co-op terms are a common path into testing. Bilingual testing experience is valuable in Ottawa and Quebec, where products often ship in English and French. Mention work authorization if you are not a citizen or permanent resident.
| Job Bank occupation | Low | Median | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software QA (quality Assurance) Analyst (NOC 21222) | $28.85/h | $46.15/h | $68.68/h |

FAQ
Do QA engineers need to know how to code?
For automation and SDET roles, yes: expect a coding exercise in Java, Python or JavaScript. Manual QA analyst roles may not require it, but basic SQL and the ability to read code make you much stronger. If you are learning, show one real automated suite in a public repository.
How do I move from manual testing to automation on my resume?
Keep your manual testing experience, but add bullets where you automated even a small part of it, and list the framework and language you used. A personal project that automates a public demo app and runs in CI helps. Change your headline only once you have done automation in real work.
Should I list every testing tool I have touched?
No. List the tools you could configure and use without help, and put the ones in the posting first. Recruiters search for framework names, but interviewers will ask how you structured tests, handled data and fixed flaky cases, so depth matters more than length.
Is ISTQB worth getting?
The Foundation Level is useful for junior testers and career changers because it gives a shared vocabulary and is often listed as a preferred qualification. It rarely decides a hire on its own. For experienced engineers, shipped frameworks and measurable results outweigh additional certificates.
What is the difference between a QA engineer and an SDET resume?
An SDET resume should read closer to a developer resume: frameworks you designed, code you wrote, testability changes made in application code and CI pipelines you built. A QA engineer resume can balance test design, exploratory testing, release decisions and automation. Match the label to what you actually do day to day.
