Business Analyst Resume Examples: Entry Level, Mid Level and Senior

A business analyst sits between the people who have a problem and the people who build the fix, so the resume has to show both sides: you can draw out what the business really needs, and you can turn it into requirements a delivery team can build and test. Hiring managers look for the domain you know, the kinds of systems you have worked on, your requirements artifacts and evidence that projects went better because of you. The samples below follow a junior BA in insurance, a mid-level BA on banking systems and a lead BA running analysis for an ERP program.

Ethan Brooks-Nakamura: Junior Business Analyst

Ethan's resume covers the full BA cycle on a small scale: interviews, process maps, user stories, UAT and data profiling. Counts make each step concrete. The ECBA and a capstone with a real client show commitment to the BA path instead of a general business degree with no direction.

How to write each section of a business analyst resume

Header and title

Use your actual title, whether business analyst, business systems analyst or IT business analyst, and match the posting's wording in the summary if your work fits. Include LinkedIn and city. A portfolio is uncommon for BAs, but a sanitized sample of a process map or user story can help junior candidates if shared in an interview.

Never attach real client documents; they are almost always confidential.

Summary

Name your domain (banking, insurance, healthcare, supply chain, public sector), the systems you have worked on and your delivery method. Domain knowledge is often the deciding factor between two analysts with similar skills, because it shortens the time needed to understand the business.

Add one line that shows your strength, such as regulatory change, data-heavy projects, ERP or integration work.

Experience

For each project, show the problem, your analysis artifacts and the outcome. Useful outcomes include time saved in a process, defects avoided, customization reduced, deadlines met for regulatory changes and adoption after rollout. Name artifacts like BRDs, user stories, process models, data mappings and test scripts so readers see your toolkit.

Show who you worked with. BAs are hired for the ability to bring business, IT and risk teams to agreement, so naming the groups involved is evidence.

Skills and tools

Group skills into elicitation and analysis, modeling, data and delivery tools. List techniques such as BPMN, use cases, gap analysis and root cause analysis, then tools like Visio, Lucidchart, Jira, Confluence and SQL. Name enterprise systems you know, such as SAP, Salesforce or Guidewire, because many postings require them.

If you write SQL or build dashboards, say so plainly; it separates you from analysts who rely on others for data.

Education and certifications

Business, information systems, computer science and industry degrees are all common. IIBA certifications (ECBA, CCBA, CBAP) are the most recognized BA credentials; each requires a set amount of experience except the ECBA. The PMI-PBA is an alternative valued in PMI-heavy organizations.

Agile certifications and Lean Six Sigma belts can help depending on the team. List them after your BA credential.

Business Analyst resume summary examples

Entry-level objective: Information systems graduate seeking a junior business analyst role on an agile delivery team. Brings ECBA certification, SQL and Excel skills and a capstone where process maps and a prototype were used in a real university vendor selection.

It shows the candidate already knows BA artifacts and has produced work someone used.

New-grad summary: Junior business analyst on an insurance claims portal, writing user stories, mapping processes, profiling data in SQL and running user acceptance testing with adjusters. Good at turning workarounds into requirements developers can estimate.

Specific tasks and domain make the first year of experience feel substantial.

Mid-level summary: Business analyst with six years in retail banking, leading requirements for lending, payments and regulatory change. Runs workshops across business, risk and IT, writes specifications and data mappings, and stays through testing to make sure what ships matches what was agreed.

Domain, project types and end-to-end involvement are what hiring managers in financial services screen for.

Senior summary: Lead business analyst and CBAP with 14 years in distribution and manufacturing, heading analysis on a multi-site SAP S/4HANA program. Leads analysts, runs fit-gap and requirements governance and links process redesign to configuration and data migration.

It signals program scale and leadership, plus the ERP and process depth that large programs require.

Business Analyst resume bullet examples: weak vs strong

The strong versions use made-up figures for a fictional candidate. Replace them with your own real numbers, or describe the scope (team size, volume, frequency) if you have none.

Elicitation
WeakGathered requirements from stakeholders.
StrongRan 15 workshops with lending, risk, legal and IT, delivering a signed-off mortgage renewal specification in eight weeks.

Shows who was involved, how many sessions it took and that agreement was reached.

Process analysis
WeakCreated process maps.
StrongMapped the first notice of loss process with 12 adjusters and found four duplicate entry steps that the new portal eliminated.

A process map matters when it uncovers waste that the project then removes.

Data
WeakPerformed data analysis.
StrongProfiled claims data in SQL before migration, flagging 2,300 records with missing policy links for cleanup ahead of go-live.

Shows SQL skill used to prevent a concrete migration problem.

Integration requirements
WeakWrote technical requirements.
StrongDefined API requirements for merchant onboarding with three partner banks, covering message formats, error handling and service levels.

Specific technical content proves the BA can work with engineers, not just business users.

Testing
WeakSupported UAT for releases.
StrongPlanned UAT for six sites with 60 business testers and reached go-live with no critical defects open.

Scale and a clean outcome show test leadership rather than passive support.

Scope control
WeakHelped manage project scope.
StrongChallenged every gap in fit-gap workshops for 220 processes with owners, reducing custom development requests before they reached the build team.

Reducing customization is one of the clearest value signals on ERP programs.

Process improvement
WeakSuggested process improvements.
StrongProposed chargeback automation after mapping the manual process, cutting handling time per case from 25 to 10 minutes.

Before and after time makes the improvement easy to believe.

Governance and quality
WeakMaintained project documentation.
StrongIntroduced a traceability matrix linking each requirement to test cases, now standard across the lending team's projects.

Shows a practice others adopted, proving it improved quality.

US vs Canada: business analyst resumes and pay

United States

US business analyst roles are unregulated, but titles split between business analyst and business systems analyst depending on how technical the job is, so mirror the posting. Healthcare BAs often need knowledge of HIPAA, claims and EDI transactions; banking BAs work with regulations from agencies such as the CFPB and OCC; public sector BAs on state systems may need background checks. Federal and defense contracts may require citizenship and a clearance. Use US date formats and keep to two pages at most.

Canada

In Canada, BA work is also unregulated. Federal government BA work is often contracted through procurement vehicles and usually requires a security clearance, plus English and French for many roles. Banking BAs deal with OSFI guidelines and provincial or federal consumer rules, while insurance BAs may work with provincial regulators. Quebec projects usually work in French. Name the regulations you translated into requirements, because regulatory experience is valued in Canada's concentrated banking and insurance sectors.

FAQ

What should a business analyst resume include?

Your domain, the systems you worked on, the requirements artifacts you produce, your delivery method and outcomes such as process time saved or defects avoided. Add technical skills like SQL if you use them. A summary that names your industry and project type helps hiring managers place you fast.

How do I become a business analyst with no BA title?

Show BA tasks you already do in another role: documenting processes, gathering requirements for a tool, testing a system change or analyzing data for decisions. Add the ECBA and a project with real stakeholders. Use BA vocabulary carefully and honestly in your bullets.

Do business analysts need SQL on their resume?

Not always, but it helps a lot. Many BA postings ask for SQL to profile data, validate migrations or answer questions without waiting for an analyst. If you know it, show it in a bullet. If you don't, consider learning the basics.

Business analyst vs business systems analyst: which title should I use?

Use the title you held. In the summary, describe your mix of business and technical work so recruiters searching for either title can see the fit. Business systems analyst usually implies more technical requirements, such as integrations, data mappings or system configuration.

Is the CBAP worth listing?

Yes, if you hold it. It signals several years of BA experience and is recognized by large employers, banks and consultancies. It is rarely a strict requirement, so experience and outcomes still matter more. Junior analysts can show the ECBA instead.
