Kwame Asante-Boateng: Corporate Finance Intern
Kwame has internships rather than a full-time job, so every bullet shows a real model or report that someone used: a budget workbook, a capital request, credit memos. Passing CFA Level I and the CSC signals commitment to finance in Canada. The student fund project proves valuation skills an internship alone may not show.

Rebecca Lindgren-Ochoa: Senior Financial Analyst, FP&A
Rebecca is past basic reporting, so her bullets show models she owns, plans she runs with budget owners, and recommendations leadership adopted. She names Adaptive Planning, NetSuite and SQL in context because FP&A postings filter on systems. Her move from operations finance to SaaS explains why her metrics vocabulary covers both branch P&Ls and churn.

How to write each section of a financial analyst resume
Header
List your name, city and state or province, phone, email and LinkedIn. Add your designation after your name only when it is earned: Anjali Venkataraman, CFA or Kwame Asante-Boateng, CPA. CFA candidates should write the level passed elsewhere, never CFA after the name, because the CFA Institute restricts how candidates may refer to the program.
A personal website is rarely needed, though a link to a public stock pitch or modeling sample can help students.
Summary
State your years of experience, the finance function (FP&A, corporate development, investment analysis, treasury) and the industry. FP&A in a software company and credit analysis at a bank use different vocabulary, so match the first line to the posting.
Name the planning or ERP systems you know and one business area you partner with best, such as sales, operations or supply chain.
Experience
Every bullet should answer what you analyzed or built, with which tool, and what decision or process changed. Useful measures include forecast accuracy, hours saved on close or reporting, savings identified, price realization and the size of the budget or business you covered.
Be careful with confidential numbers. You can describe a budget as a division or a project above a threshold rather than disclosing exact revenue, and percentages or relative changes are usually safe.
Skills
Group skills into modeling and analysis, systems (ERP, EPM and BI tools), and data skills such as SQL or Python. Excel deserves specific functions or techniques, not just the word Excel, since every applicant lists it. Mention the size of the data you work with when it is impressive.
Add accounting framework knowledge where relevant: US GAAP for most US companies, IFRS for Canadian public companies, and ASPE for Canadian private businesses.
Education and designations
List degree, school and year; finance, accounting and economics majors are standard, and an MBA goes first if it is your highest degree. Show CFA progress precisely, such as Passed CFA Level II, or CFA charterholder once awarded.
CPA licensure in the US is granted by state boards, and in Canada through CPA Canada and the provincial bodies. Mention the Canadian Securities Course or FINRA exams only if the role touches investments or advisory work.
Financial Analyst resume summary examples
Entry-level objective: Finance graduate seeking an analyst role in FP&A where models feed real operating decisions. Brings two finance internships, a budget-versus-actual workbook still used by a manufacturer, and CFA Level I passed on the first attempt.
It names the target function and offers three pieces of verifiable proof instead of generic enthusiasm.
New-grad summary: Financial analyst with internship experience in corporate finance and commercial banking. Builds three-statement and DCF models, writes variance commentary leaders can act on, and pulls data with SQL and Power BI. Comfortable presenting findings to plant managers and controllers.
It sounds like a working analyst, listing the models, tools and audience the candidate has already handled.
Mid-level summary: FP&A analyst with five years in software and field services finance. Owns driver-based revenue forecasts and the operating plan for sales, partners directly with budget owners, and automates board reporting with SQL and Tableau. Known for pricing analysis that leadership acts on.
Industry, model ownership, partnering and a distinctive strength all fit in three sentences, matching what FP&A managers screen for.
Senior summary: CFA charterholder leading FP&A for multi-division industrial businesses. Runs planning teams, built capital allocation and M&A valuation processes, and advises executives on pricing and investments. Twelve years turning complex operations into clear forecasts the board relies on.
It leads with credential and scope, then shows strategic reach, which is what a CFO hiring a finance leader needs to see.
Financial Analyst resume bullet examples: weak vs strong
The strong versions use made-up figures for a fictional candidate. Replace them with your own real numbers, or describe the scope (team size, volume, frequency) if you have none.
Shows the method you changed and a measurable accuracy result, which is what forecast owners are judged on.
Gives your role in the process, the number of partners and the outcome rather than vague involvement.
Variance work only matters when it explains a cause and drives an action, and this bullet shows both.
Names the model's purpose and the decision it changed, so a reader sees business impact instead of software skill.
Pairs specific tools with time saved and a quality gain, which proves technical skill beyond Excel.
Ties analysis to a policy change and a revenue result, which is the highest-value outcome an analyst can show.
Shows you built a lasting decision framework, a strong signal for senior and corporate development roles.
Close support is routine, so the strong version shows the quality and timing result your work produced.

Data skills set analysts apart; pair them with time saved or reporting improved.
Accounting knowledge
- US GAAP
- IFRS
- Month-end close
- Accruals and reconciliations
- Cash flow forecasting
Most FP&A roles expect you to read the general ledger and explain how accounting entries hit the P&L.
Soft skills, and how to prove them
- Business partnering: Name the leaders you supported, such as sales or plant managers, and a decision they made using your analysis.
- Clear storytelling with numbers: Mention board decks, executive summaries or variance commentary you wrote and how leadership used them.
- Skepticism and accuracy: Describe an error, unusual trend or bad assumption you caught before it reached a report or plan.
- Prioritization under deadlines: Show you delivered close, plan or reforecast deadlines while handling ad hoc requests from executives.
- Influence without authority: Give an example where budget owners changed spending or pricing because of your recommendation, without reporting to you.
Certifications and licenses
- Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) (CFA Institute): Highly valued in investment, valuation and corporate development roles; list passed levels precisely until the charter is awarded.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA), US (State boards of accountancy (Uniform CPA Exam by AICPA and NASBA)): Helpful for analysts close to accounting and controllership; less common in pure FP&A.
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), Canada (CPA Canada and provincial CPA bodies): Strong in Canadian finance teams, especially where reporting under IFRS or ASPE is part of the job.
- Financial Modeling & Valuation Analyst (FMVA) (Corporate Finance Institute): A practical modeling credential that helps career changers show hands-on skills, though less weighted than CFA or CPA.
- Canadian Securities Course (CSC) (Canadian Securities Institute): Common for analysts entering Canadian banking and investment roles; a prerequisite for many registered positions.

US vs Canada: financial analyst resumes and pay
United States
US corporate finance teams report under US GAAP, and public companies file with the SEC, so mention 10-K, 10-Q or SOX experience if you have it. A CFA or CPA is respected but rarely required for FP&A; investment banking and brokerage roles may require FINRA licenses such as the SIE and Series 7, sponsored by the employer. Many postings ask for advanced Excel and SQL alongside an ERP. Use the US date style on the resume, and leave out photo, age and marital status.
| BLS occupation | 10th pct. | Median | 90th pct. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Financial and Investment Analysts (SOC 13-2051) | $63,720 | $102,740 | $180,860 |
Annual wages, US national, BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025.
Canada
Canadian public companies report under IFRS, and private companies often use ASPE, so naming the framework you know helps. Securities are regulated provincially, for example by the Ontario Securities Commission, and investment roles may ask for the Canadian Securities Course. CPA Canada designations are well known, and the CFA charter is common in Toronto's banking and asset management firms. Roles in Quebec or with federal Crown corporations may require French. Mention work permit status if you are not a citizen or permanent resident.
| Job Bank occupation | Low | Median | High |

| Financial Analyst (NOC 11101) | $28.21/h | $43.27/h | $72.36/h |

FAQ
Should a financial analyst resume list Excel skills?
Yes, but specifically. Everyone writes Excel, so name the techniques you use, such as INDEX/MATCH, pivot tables, data tables, Power Query or VBA, and show a model you built in a bullet. If you also use SQL, Power BI or Python, list them, since they separate you from analysts who only work in spreadsheets.
How do I list CFA progress on my resume?
Write the highest level passed, for example Passed CFA Level I, or CFA Level II candidate if you are registered for the exam. Do not put CFA after your name until you are a charterholder. The CFA Institute has rules on how candidates describe the program, and recruiters in finance know them.
Can I share real company numbers on my resume?
Avoid disclosing confidential revenue, margins or deal terms. Use relative measures such as forecast accuracy improvement, time saved or the scale of a budget described in general terms. Public company figures already disclosed in filings are safer, but keep the focus on your contribution.
Is FP&A experience different from accounting on a resume?
Yes. Accounting bullets focus on accurate records, close and compliance, while FP&A bullets focus on forecasts, plans, variance explanations and decisions influenced. If you are moving from accounting to FP&A, highlight analysis, business partnering and any forecasting or budgeting work you did.
Do I need an MBA to become a senior financial analyst?
Not usually. Many senior analysts and finance managers advance through experience plus a CFA or CPA. An MBA helps for strategy, corporate development or leadership roles in large companies. If you have one, list it in education; if not, show strategic work in your bullets.
