Finance & Accounting Resume Examples & Templates for 2026

Finance teams hire people they can trust with the numbers, so their resumes are read for accuracy as much as for skill. A controller wants to see which ledgers you owned, how you handled month-end, which software you worked in and whether auditors ever had to come back to your work. An FP&A lead looks for models that informed real decisions.

The samples gathered here cover accounting, bookkeeping, financial analysis and business analysis. Each role page shows an early-career, mid-level and senior version of the same job, with guidance on presenting designations such as the CPA and CPA Canada, ERP experience, close and reporting responsibilities, and the analytical work that hiring managers across North America expect to find.

How to write a finance or accounting resume that a controller trusts

Lead with ownership of the books

Generic phrases like "responsible for accounting duties" tell a reader nothing. Say which processes were yours from start to finish: accounts payable for a set of entities, bank and balance sheet reconciliations, payroll journal entries, revenue recognition, fixed asset schedules, intercompany eliminations. Then say what you improved, such as a shorter close, fewer adjusting entries after review, or a cleaner audit file.

Designations: CPA in the US, CPA Canada, and what to write while you study

In the US the CPA license is issued by a state board, so write CPA, State of Illinois rather than a bare acronym. In Canada the designation is granted through a provincial body under CPA Canada, for example CPA, CPA Ontario. Candidates still in progress can write "CPA candidate, passed FAR and AUD" or "enrolled in the CPA Professional Education Program" with the expected completion term.

Other credentials worth listing when relevant are the CMA, CFA charterholder or level passed, CIA for internal audit, and the Enrolled Agent credential for US tax work. Keep the exact official name and the year awarded.

Software, spreadsheets and ERP systems

Recruiters filter finance applicants on systems almost as often as on degrees. Group your tools so they are easy to scan: ERP and general ledger (SAP, Oracle NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Sage Intacct), small business accounting (QuickBooks Online, Xero, Sage 50), planning and reporting (Adaptive, Anaplan, Power BI, Tableau) and data work (SQL, Power Query). For Excel, name the techniques instead of writing "advanced": pivot tables, XLOOKUP, three-statement models, macros or variance bridges.

Analysts: show the decision behind the model

Financial and business analysts are judged on what their analysis changed. A bullet that says you built a forecast is weaker than one that explains the forecast was used to set a hiring plan, renegotiate a supplier contract or drop an unprofitable product line. Business analysts should also mention requirements gathering, process maps, user stories and the stakeholders they worked with, since the role often sits between finance, operations and IT.

Name the kinds of analysis you are trusted with: budgeting and reforecasting, variance commentary, pricing studies, cash flow forecasts, unit economics, scenario models for acquisitions or capital projects. Say who received your work, whether a department head, the CFO or a board committee, because the audience tells a reader how much responsibility you carried.

Audit, compliance and accuracy on the page

If you came from public accounting, list the industries and the type of engagements you worked on, such as financial statement audits, reviews or tax compliance, without naming confidential clients. In industry roles, describe how you supported external auditors and what came of it. Above all, proofread every figure and date on your resume twice. A typo in a finance application is read as a signal about how you handle a ledger.

Tailoring for each finance posting

A bookkeeping job at a small firm and a senior accountant role at a multinational use different vocabulary, so adjust the summary, the order of bullets and the software list each time. Keep terminology consistent with the posting where it is accurate for you, for instance GAAP in the US and IFRS or ASPE in Canada. The AutoApplyMax builder adapts your own resume to a pasted job description, and the free ATS checker shows the keywords you have not covered yet.

FAQ

How should I list a CPA on my resume if I am still studying?

Write your real status in plain words and add the expected date. Examples include CPA candidate with the sections you have passed, or enrolled in the CPA Canada Professional Education Program. Do not use the letters CPA after your name until the license or designation is granted, since state boards and provincial bodies treat that as a misrepresentation.

What software should an accounting resume mention?

List the general ledger or ERP systems you have actually used, such as NetSuite, SAP, Dynamics 365, QuickBooks Online or Xero, plus Excel techniques and any reporting tools. Mention the most important system again inside a job bullet so the reader sees what you did with it, not only that you have logged in.

How do I describe month-end close on a resume?

State which part of the close you owned, the deadline you worked to and any improvement you made. For example, describe preparing accruals and reconciliations for several entities and reducing late adjustments after you rebuilt the checklist. Use your own real figures for days saved or accounts handled, or describe the change in words if you do not have them.

Should a financial analyst resume include a summary?

A short summary helps when it names your specialty and environment, such as FP&A for a manufacturing group or equity research coverage of a sector. Keep it to two or three lines and skip vague traits. If you are moving from accounting into analysis, use the summary to connect your reporting background to the planning work you want.

Are these finance and accounting resume examples free to use?

Yes. You can read and adapt every sample at no cost. The candidates, companies and firms on these pages are fictional, so swap in your own employers, systems and figures. To turn your current resume into one of these layouts, upload it to the AutoApplyMax builder and paste the job description you want to target.
