AI cover-letter generators promise a personalised letter in 30 seconds. Most output generic filler. This piece tests four popular options on the same job description and shows what each actually produces.
The test
Same input: 5 years of PM experience at two SaaS startups, applying to a Series B fintech mid-level PM role. Same JD across all four tools. Timed from prompt to first draft.
1. AutoApplyMax
Time: 18 seconds.
Output: Three paragraphs. Opened by referencing the fintech's payment-orchestration positioning (extracted from the JD). Middle paragraph tied our own metric ("reduced onboarding friction by 34%") to their stated challenge ("scale merchant onboarding"). Closed with a specific reason we wanted to work in fintech now. Editable inline — each sentence has a rewrite / punchier / tone-shift menu.

Output: Four paragraphs. Well-structured, safe language. Less specific to the fintech's positioning — reads like a generic PM cover letter with the company name pasted in. Uses "I am confident that my skills align with your needs" three times.

3. Rezi
Time: 20 seconds.
Output: Three paragraphs, ATS-optimised language. Extracted the JD keywords aggressively and re-used them almost too literally. Reads slightly robotic — the algorithm prioritises keyword match over natural tone.
Verdict: Best when the letter is read only by an ATS filter. Weaker when a hiring manager reads it. See Rezi.
4. ChatGPT prompt
Time: 40 seconds (including copy/paste of JD + CV summary).
Output: Depends heavily on prompt quality. With a good prompt ("write a 3-paragraph cover letter for the JD below from the perspective of the candidate below, in a confident but modest tone, no cliches, quote one specific detail from the JD"), the result rivals AutoApplyMax. With a lazy prompt, you get filler that reads like a template.
Verdict: Ceiling is high if you know how to prompt. Floor is low if you don't. The friction of pasting the JD and CV every time makes this the slowest option for repeated use.
