IT Manager Resume Template (Harvard): Entry level Example
Renee Takahashi-Brooks, Senior Systems Analyst and Acting IT Lead ATS-friendly
Renee has not held the manager title yet, so the sample leans on acting-lead evidence: people she supervised, a vendor she directed, policies she wrote and a budget the owners approved. Healthcare details show she already handles HIPAA obligations. The service catalog project demonstrates process thinking, which is what most first-time IT manager interviews probe for.

IT Manager Resume Template (Modern): Mid level Example
Oluwaseun Adeyemi, IT Manager ATS-friendly
Oluwaseun's bullets read like a department head: team scope, a budget renegotiated to fund an upgrade, a SOC 2 audit, and service reports leadership actually reads. The warehouse context explains why uptime matters, and the PIPEDA review shows Canadian privacy awareness. Canadian spelling such as centres appears naturally. The PMP supports his project-heavy role without crowding the summary.

How to write each section of a IT manager resume
Header and title
Include name, city, phone, email and LinkedIn. Unlike engineers, IT managers rarely need a GitHub link; a LinkedIn profile with recommendations from executives or vendors does more work.
Use a headline that matches the level: IT Manager, IT Operations Manager, Head of IT or Director of IT. If your official title understates your scope, such as IT Supervisor running the whole department, keep the real title on the job entry and describe the scope in the first bullet.
Summary
Lead with leadership scope: years managing, team size, number of sites or employees supported and budget responsibility. Then name the industries you know, because a manager from healthcare, logistics or finance brings a different set of compliance and uptime expectations.
Finish with what you are hired for, perhaps audit readiness, cost control, acquisitions or building a team from scratch. Technical skills belong lower on the page; executives read the top for judgment.
Experience
Write management bullets around decisions and their effects. Good evidence includes budgets built, contracts renegotiated, service targets set and met, audits passed, projects sponsored and people hired or promoted. Name the stakeholders involved, such as the CFO, operations leaders or an outside auditor.
Keep one or two technical bullets per role to show you still understand the stack, but avoid lines that describe hands-on work a technician would do. A hiring panel wants to know you can delegate as well as diagnose.
Skills and compliance
Split skills into leadership and finance, service management, security and compliance, and technology platforms. List the frameworks you have actually worked under, such as SOC 2, HIPAA, PCI DSS, SOX IT controls or PIPEDA, rather than every acronym in the field.
Keep the technology list short and current: identity, productivity suite, cloud, ITSM tool and any ERP you supported. Long lists of software suggest a technician rather than a manager.
Education and certifications
A bachelor's degree in information systems, computer science or business is common at this level, and an MBA helps for director roles that report to finance. Keep education brief and below experience.
ITIL 4 Foundation fits service desk ownership, PMP supports project-heavy roles, and CISSP or CISM signals security leadership. List only what you hold, and leave out expired vendor certifications from early in your career.
IT Manager resume summary examples
Entry-level objective: Systems analyst and acting IT lead seeking a first IT manager role in a multi-site healthcare or professional services organization. Brings supervision of three technicians, vendor coordination, written security policies and an approved hardware budget.
It turns informal leadership into concrete management evidence, which is the main hurdle for a first-time manager application.
New-manager summary: Newly promoted IT supervisor leading a four-person support team at a regional credit union. Owns the service desk queue, runs weekly one-on-ones, tracks spend against a departmental budget and coordinates with the core banking vendor on outages and upgrades.
Team size, budget awareness and vendor contact show the person already performs the three duties every IT manager posting lists.
Mid-level summary: IT manager with four years leading teams in logistics. Runs a seven-person department, owns the operating and capital budget, renegotiates vendor contracts and led a clean SOC 2 Type II audit. Publishes service levels the business reviews monthly and keeps warehouses running through peak season.
Combines people, money, compliance and service results, giving a hiring executive a full picture in four sentences.
Senior summary: IT director with ten years leading technology functions for manufacturers and a private equity portfolio. Sets IT strategy with executives, integrates acquisitions, built a board-reported security program and develops leaders inside a 22-person organization.
Strategy, acquisitions, governance and leadership development are what director searches screen for, and none of it relies on a tool list.
IT Manager resume bullet examples: weak vs strong
The strong versions use made-up figures for a fictional candidate. Replace them with your own real numbers, or describe the scope (team size, volume, frequency) if you have none.
Shows ownership of money and the trade-off you made with it, which executives care about more than the budget's existence.
Contract structure and accountability matter as much as price, and this bullet covers both.
Making IT performance visible to the business is a management act, not a technical one.
Owning the controls and the outcome is far stronger than assisting, and the audit type tells readers the depth involved.
Lists the parts of a real program and its governance, proving security is run deliberately.
Growing people from within shows leadership results that a headcount number alone cannot.
A plan that worked in a real outage is the strongest proof of preparedness.
Scope, timeline and retired duplication show exactly what integration delivered for the owners.

US vs Canada: IT manager resumes and pay
United States
In the US, IT manager titles cover everything from a hands-on lead at a 60-person firm to a department head at a multinational, so state team size and budget plainly. Regulated sectors shape the role: hospitals expect HIPAA security rule experience, retailers PCI DSS, public companies SOX IT general controls, and SaaS vendors SOC 2. Federal contractors may need CMMC readiness or a clearance. Keep personal details such as photo, age and marital status off the page.
| BLS occupation | 10th pct. | Median | 90th pct. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Computer and Information Systems Managers (SOC 11-3021) | $107,550 | $175,140 | $297,510 |
Annual wages, US national, BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025.
Canada
Canadian employers use IT Manager, Manager of Information Technology and, in government, titles like IT Services Manager. Privacy obligations under PIPEDA, Quebec's Law 25 and provincial health information acts mean data residency and breach reporting come up often, so mention any privacy assessment or breach plan you led. Federal roles may require security screening and bilingual capability. Use Canadian spelling such as centre and licence, and confirm work authorization if you are not a citizen or permanent resident.
| Job Bank occupation | Low | Median | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Information Technology (IT) Development Manager (NOC 20012) | $43.75/h | $66.67/h | $103.37/h |

FAQ
What is the best resume template for an IT manager?
For online applications, use a single-column template that applicant tracking systems read top to bottom. The IT manager samples on this page come in four of them: Harvard (shown with the entry-level resume, education can sit first), Modern (mid-level, experience first, a safe default for most employers), Consulting (senior, achievements in bold stand out to the recruiter) and European (fits a long career on one page). Compact and Creative use two columns: they read well to a person, but some older ATS parse them out of order, so keep them for referrals and emails to a hiring manager.
Should an IT manager resume be one page?
Usually, yes. In the US, one page is the norm for an IT manager with less than about 10 years of experience, and all six samples on this page fit on one page. A senior IT manager with a long, relevant track record can use two pages, as long as page one carries the most recent and relevant roles. Canadian employers accept two pages more readily than US ones.
How do I get my first IT manager job without the title?
Collect evidence of management work you already do: supervising technicians, running ticket reviews, coordinating vendors, writing policies or preparing budget requests. Put it in your first bullets, name the scope, and consider ITIL 4 Foundation or a project management credential. Smaller organizations often promote a trusted senior admin into the role.
How technical should an IT manager resume be?
Technical enough to earn your team's respect, but focused on management. Keep a short platforms section and one technical bullet per role. Spend the rest of the page on budgets, vendors, service levels, audits and people, since executives hiring an IT manager are buying judgment and accountability.
Should I include my budget figure?
Yes, if you are allowed to share it and can explain it. A rounded range or phrase such as seven-figure operating budget is fine. Pair it with what you did with the money, like funding an upgrade through savings, because the number alone says little about your judgment.
What is the difference between an IT manager and an IT director?
An IT manager usually runs a team or department and executes the plan, while a director sets strategy, owns the full budget and reports to an executive. Directors spend more time on roadmaps, acquisitions, governance and developing managers. Write your resume at the level you are targeting, with matching evidence.
Do IT managers need security certifications?
Not always, but security is now part of most IT manager roles, especially where there is no dedicated security team. CISSP or CISM help for regulated industries and director paths. Practical evidence, like leading an audit, building an incident plan or rolling out MFA, matters just as much on the page.
Are these IT manager resume templates free?
Yes. Every sample on this page downloads free as a PDF (exact design, selectable text) or as an editable Word .docx file, with no account. If you want the AI to fill a template with your own experience and tailor it to a job posting, the free AutoApplyMax plan includes 1 tailored resume a month.
