There is no single "best" job site. The best one depends on the job: a federal role is only posted on USAJOBS, a Montreal public-sector role is often on Job Bank, a senior software engineer is easier to find on a tech board, and a new graduate has better odds on a campus platform. This guide sorts the main job search sites in the United States and Canada by what they are good for, with official figures where the sites publish them.
Context for 2026: the US Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 7.1 million job openings in August 2026, while in Canada employment fell by 68,000 in September 2026 and unemployment rose to 6.5% (Statistics Canada). More competition per posting means the site matters less than applying early and tailoring each application.

The big general job boards (both countries)
1. LinkedIn
LinkedIn reports over 1.3 billion members in more than 200 countries and territories. It is the strongest site in both countries for professional, office and tech roles, because recruiters search profiles as well as posting jobs. Two features matter most: Easy Apply (apply with your profile and resume without leaving LinkedIn) and recruiter visibility through your profile. Best for: white-collar roles, networking, senior candidates.
If you apply to many Easy Apply jobs, the AutoApplyMax extension auto-applies to LinkedIn Easy Apply postings that match your filters, with your tailored resume and answers to screening questions. See also our LinkedIn Easy Apply guide.
2. Indeed
Indeed aggregates listings from employers, staffing agencies and company career sites, and runs separate country sites (indeed.com, ca.indeed.com). Its strength is breadth: hourly, healthcare, trades, warehouse and office jobs sit side by side, and many employers post there first. Watch out for duplicates and fake postings; our Indeed scams guide lists the red flags. Best for: volume, local and hourly jobs, every industry.
3. Glassdoor
Glassdoor is best known for anonymous company reviews, salary reports and interview questions. It belongs to Recruit Holdings, the owner of Indeed, which acquired it in 2018; in July 2025 Recruit announced that Glassdoor's operations would be integrated into Indeed. Use it to research employers and salary ranges before you apply or negotiate. Best for: company research. For a full comparison, read LinkedIn vs Indeed vs Glassdoor.
4. ZipRecruiter (USA)
ZipRecruiter distributes employers' postings to many job boards and matches candidates to jobs; job seekers use it free. Its "1-click apply" works with the resume stored in your profile. Best for: small and mid-sized US employers, quick applications.
5. Monster and CareerBuilder
Both are long-running boards. Their parent, CareerBuilder + Monster, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on June 24, 2025, and the job boards were then sold (BOLD won the final bid in mid-2025). The sites still carry listings, but treat them as secondary sources and cross-check on the employer's site.
Government job sites
6. USAJOBS (US federal government)
USAJOBS is the federal government's official employment site, part of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM). It states an average of 1,288 jobs posted per day, 28,438 jobs open per day and 6,431,345 active profiles. Federal jobs are posted there, and federal resumes follow their own rules: they are longer and must show hours per week, dates and detail that proves each qualification in the announcement.
7. Job Bank (Government of Canada)
Job Bank is "Canada's national employment service, available as a website and mobile app", run by Employment and Social Development Canada. It lists 55,000 jobs advertised per month and 371,000 registered employers, plus a job-matching service, job alerts, a resume builder and wage data by occupation and region. Many employers hiring temporary foreign workers must advertise on Job Bank, which makes it unusually complete for trades, hospitality, agriculture and care roles. Best for: Canadian job seekers in every sector, newcomers, wage research.
8. GC Jobs and provincial portals (Canada)
Jobs in the federal public service are posted on the Government of Canada's GC Jobs site; provinces, cities, school boards and health authorities run their own career portals. If you target the public sector, set alerts directly there.
Specialized job sites
9. Dice (tech, USA)
Dice focuses on technology roles: software engineering, data, cybersecurity, IT infrastructure, often with contract and contract-to-hire options. Best for: experienced tech professionals and IT contractors.
10. Built In (tech and startups, US cities)
Built In publishes tech and startup jobs organized by city hubs in major US tech markets, with company profiles describing culture and benefits. Best for: tech-adjacent roles in major US hubs, including non-engineering jobs at tech companies.
11. Wellfound (startups, US and Canada)
Wellfound, formerly AngelList Talent, lists startup jobs and usually shows the salary range and equity up front. Best for: startup roles and early-stage companies, remote-friendly positions.
12. Handshake (students and new grads, USA)
Handshake partners with universities so students and recent graduates can find internships and entry-level jobs from employers recruiting on campus. Best for: internships and first jobs. Canadian students should start with their university's career centre platform.
13. Ladders (senior and high-salary roles, USA)
Ladders focuses on higher-paid professional roles (its long-standing positioning is jobs paying $100K and up). Best for: senior individual contributors and managers. For executive roles in both countries, retained executive search firms and LinkedIn are still where most searches happen; executive jobs are often never advertised publicly.
14. Canadian aggregators: Talent.com and Eluta
Talent.com (founded in Canada) aggregates listings from many sources, and Eluta indexes jobs taken directly from Canadian employers' own websites. Both are useful as a second pass to catch postings that never reached the big boards.
How to use job sites without wasting your time
- Pick 2-3 sites, not 10. One general board (LinkedIn or Indeed), one specialized board for your field, and Job Bank or USAJOBS if you target the public sector.
- Set alerts and apply early. Fresh postings get the most attention; a job that has been open for a month has hundreds of applicants.
- Apply on the employer's own site when you can. Many listings on boards redirect to the employer's ATS (Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, iCIMS). The AutoApplyMax extension autofills those forms from your profile; you review and click Submit.
- Tailor the resume to each posting. ATS filters read keywords. Check your match with the free ATS score checker before you apply.
- Use the right format for the country. See Canadian resume vs US resume.
- Track everything. A simple tracker stops you from applying twice and reminds you to follow up; see our job application tracker guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best job search site in the USA?
For most people, LinkedIn and Indeed together cover the largest share of listings: LinkedIn for professional and tech roles and recruiter visibility, Indeed for volume across every industry. Add USAJOBS for federal jobs and a specialized board (Dice, Built In, Wellfound, Handshake) for your field.
What is the best job search site in Canada?
LinkedIn and Indeed for breadth, and the Government of Canada's Job Bank, which lists 55,000 jobs advertised per month and 371,000 registered employers and includes wage data by occupation and region. Use GC Jobs for the federal public service.
Which job sites are best for executive or high-salary positions?
LinkedIn (for recruiter outreach and senior postings) and Ladders in the US, plus retained executive search firms in both countries. Many executive roles are filled through search firms and networks without a public posting.
Is Glassdoor still a separate job site from Indeed?
Glassdoor and Indeed share the same owner, Recruit Holdings, which announced in July 2025 that Glassdoor's operations would be integrated into Indeed. Glassdoor remains best known for company reviews and salary data.
How many job sites should I use?
Two or three: one general board, one specialized board for your field, and a government portal if you target the public sector. Spending the saved time on tailoring each application usually helps more than adding more boards.
Can AutoApplyMax apply on these job sites for me?
It auto-applies on LinkedIn Easy Apply only. On Indeed, Glassdoor, ZipRecruiter and company career sites (Workday, Greenhouse, Lever and others) it autofills the application from your profile and you review and click Submit yourself.
