How to Check Your Resume Against a Job Description (Free)

Sending the same resume to every job is the fastest way to collect silence. Recruiters search their applicant tracking system for the skills and titles in their posting, and hiring managers skim for proof you've done what the job needs. Checking your resume against the job description — and closing the gaps honestly — is the highest-leverage 15 minutes of any application.

Here's how to do it by hand, and how to do it in seconds with a free ATS resume checker.

Why matching the job description matters

A job description is the closest thing you have to the hiring team's checklist. It tells you which tools they use, which problems the role solves, and the exact words they'll type into a search box. When your resume uses different words for the same experience, two things happen: keyword searches miss you, and a recruiter skimming for 10 seconds doesn't make the connection either.

That's why, in our checker, keyword match carries 60% of the score when you paste a job description. Formatting and completeness are 15% each, readability 10%.

Method 1: Check your resume by hand

Step 1: Highlight the requirements

Read the posting once without editing anything. Then go through it with two colors:

Repetition is a strong signal. If "SQL" appears in the summary, the responsibilities and the requirements, it matters more than a tool mentioned once at the bottom.

Step 2: Build a keyword list

Write down the specific nouns and noun phrases: tools (Salesforce, Python, Figma), methods (Agile, A/B testing), domains (B2B SaaS, healthcare billing), and outcomes (pipeline generation, churn reduction). Skip generic words like "team player", "passionate" or "fast-paced" — they're everywhere and say nothing.

Step 3: Search your resume for each term

Ctrl+F each keyword in your resume. Mark each one as:

Step 4: Edit in the right places

Where you add a keyword matters as much as whether you add it:

Doing this by hand works, but it takes 20-30 minutes per posting and it's easy to miss terms.

Check Resume vs Job

Method 2: Use a free resume vs job description checker

Our checker automates steps 1 to 3. Here's what happens when you upload a resume and paste a posting:

  1. Keyword extraction. It strips filler words (in English and six other languages) and posting boilerplate like "requirements" or "qualifications", ignores words of three letters or fewer, boosts recognized technical and business terms, keeps terms that appear at least twice, and selects the top 25.
  2. Matching. It checks which of those terms appear in your resume. Your keyword sub-score is the share of terms found.
  3. Gap list. It shows the top missing keywords so you know exactly what to look at, and flags it when fewer than half the terms match.
  4. Structure checks. It also scores formatting, completeness and readability, so you catch problems like missing dates or no skills section in the same pass.

You get a score from 0 to 100: 80+ is Excellent, 60-79 Needs Work, under 60 Poor Match. For context, across 30,923 ATS scans between Sept 6 and Oct 6, 2026, 54% scored under 60/100. The full breakdown is in our guide to what a good resume score is.

Tips for an accurate match score

How to tailor without keyword stuffing

The goal is to describe your real experience in the employer's language — not to paste their posting into your resume. A few rules that keep you honest and readable:

Worked example

Say the posting is for a customer success manager and repeats "onboarding", "renewals", "Salesforce", "churn" and "QBRs". Your resume says:

"Managed a portfolio of client accounts and helped them get value from the product."

It's accurate but matches none of the terms and opens with a weak verb. A tailored version that stays true:

"Owned onboarding and renewals for 40 mid-market accounts in Salesforce; ran quarterly business reviews (QBRs) and cut churn in the portfolio over 12 months."

Same job, same facts — now it uses the posting's vocabulary, starts with a strong verb, and includes numbers. (Only add the churn figure if you actually have one.)

FAQ

How do I check my resume against a job description for free?

Upload your resume to the free AutoApplyMax ATS score checker and paste the full job description. You get a match score and a list of important terms from the posting that are missing from your resume. No sign-up is required.

What is a good match between a resume and a job description?

On our checker, a score of 80 or more is rated Excellent. Between 60 and 79 the resume needs a few targeted edits; below 60 it is a poor match for that posting.

How many keywords from the job description should my resume include?

There is no magic number. Include every important term you genuinely have experience with, in the posting's wording, ideally in your summary, skills section and experience bullets.

Is it okay to copy the job description into my resume?

No. Use the employer's terms to describe your real experience, but don't paste their sentences or hide keywords in white text. Recruiters will notice.

Should I tailor my resume for every job?

Yes, at least the summary, skills section and two or three bullets. Keywords differ between postings, even for the same job title.

Can AI tailor my resume to a job description?

Yes. The AutoApplyMax AI resume builder drafts a tailored version from your resume and the job description. The free plan includes 1 AI credit per month.
