How to write a cover letter with AI in 3 steps

Your resume is already in your profile, so a letter takes one paste and one click.

  1. 1

    Upload your resume once

The AI reads your experience from your profile, so every letter is grounded in what you really did.

  2. 2

Paste the job title, company and description

Pick a tone and length. The letter is written in the language of the job description.

  3. 3

    Edit, check the score, export

Click any paragraph to edit it or rewrite it with AI for free, then download a PDF or copy the text.

From job description to cover letter: a letter for this job, not a template

Paste the job description and get back a personalized letter that names the company, the role and the parts of your experience that match. Then click any paragraph to edit it, or use Rewrite AI to make it shorter, warmer, more specific or add a metric. Every rewrite is free. Pair it with a tailored resume for the same job.

Illustration with a fictional job and candidate: the job keywords your resume really covers are highlighted in the letter; skills you don’t have are left out, never invented.

Everything you need to send a great cover letter

An AI writer that reads the job posting and drafts an original letter from your actual profile, plus a full inline editor and a live match score so you know when it's ready.

Written for the exact job

The AI picks out the company, role, seniority and hard requirements, then writes an opening that shows you actually read the posting. No "I am writing to apply for the position of…"

UX Designer · Airbnb
Dear Airbnb design team,

The Host onboarding flow I obsess over is the exact one you're staffing this hire against — I've spent 200+ hours in Rewind sessions watching first-time hosts drop off at photo upload.

My last three years at Vrbo were booking-conversion work: ran 40+ tests on the listing detail page, shipped a redesign that lifted first-week bookings 11%.

If it's useful I can walk through my Vrbo case files in a first call — or send them ahead.

Sales Development Rep · HubSpot
Dear HubSpot talent team,

The move to product-led growth your team announced last quarter is exactly the SDR motion I want to sell — freemium is the honest way to open an enterprise conversation.

I hit 128% of quota in my first four quarters at Pipedrive, most of it from outbound to accounts with existing free-tier product usage — a warm signal your pipeline already generates at scale.

Would love a 20-min chat about the SMB segment specifically.

Free AI Cover Letter Generator + Live Editor — What Makes This One Different

Most free cover letter generators are template libraries — you fill in a form, they string together stock phrases that sound the same for every applicant. That's not what this is. Our AI reads the job description you paste, cross-references your uploaded resume, and drafts an original 250–350 word letter that mentions the company, the role's must-have requirements and the matching parts of your real experience. Then the built-in editor lets you refine every paragraph inline, with Rewrite AI, a live match score and a word-processor toolbar, before you hit send.

Rewrite AI on every paragraph — free, no credit

Click any paragraph in the editor, hit the Rewrite AI pencil, and pick a preset — shorter, warmer, more specific, add a metric — or type a custom instruction ("open with the last product I shipped", "less corporate, more human"). The paragraph is rewritten in place. Every rewrite is free; only the initial full draft uses a credit. Keep going until the tone and details sound like you.

Live match score with a 5-part breakdown

A single 0–100 score, updated as you type and split into five parts so you know exactly what to fix: Length (250–400 words is the sweet spot), Tone (matches the posting's formality), Job keywords (the top signals from the posting), Personalization (names the company and role) and Opener (avoids "I am writing to apply for…"). Send it at 80+; keep editing if it's lower.

Automatic language detection: French, Spanish, Portuguese, English, German

By default the generator writes in the language of the job description. Paste a French posting from Welcome to the Jungle or APEC and the cover letter is in French; paste a Spanish role from InfoJobs and it's in Spanish. German postings (Xing, StepStone), Portuguese and English work the same way. Choose a specific language from your dashboard if the posting is multilingual.

Free cover letter writer + ATS optimization

Every generated cover letter works the top keywords from the job description naturally into the text, which helps with the ATS keyword scans some companies also run on cover letters. Pair it with our free ATS resume checker for the same job, and both your resume and cover letter are optimized before you hit Submit. Free plan: 1 credit a month. Premium: 30 a month. Rewrite AI is always free and never uses a credit.

How to write a cover letter with AI, step by step

The generator writes the first draft; you make it sound like you. This is the workflow that turns an AI draft into a letter a hiring manager actually reads to the end.

  1. Upload your resume once. The letter is written from your profile (the resume you upload at signup), so the experience it cites is yours. If your resume is thin, the letter will be thin: fix the resume first with the AI resume builder.
  2. Paste the whole job posting. Company name, the role, the responsibilities and the requirements. The generator uses them to name the company and role, pick the two or three requirements your experience matches best, and address the letter to the job's location.
  3. Generate the draft. It uses 1 credit (the free plan includes 1 a month) and comes back in the language of the posting.
  4. Add one detail only you know. A product you use, a talk you saw, a team member's article, why this company and not its competitor. This is the line that separates your letter from every other AI-assisted one. Type it in directly, or ask Rewrite AI to "open with why I use their product".
  5. Tighten with the match score. Aim for 80+ on the 5-part score (length, tone, job keywords, personalization, opener). Use the free "shorter" preset if you are over 400 words.
  6. Export to match how you apply. Download a PDF for an upload field, or copy-paste into a portal's text box. For the same job, generate the tailored resume too, so the letter and resume tell the same story.

A cover letter structure that works in the US and Canada

North American hiring managers expect a short business letter, not an essay. Use this four-part template whether you write it yourself or edit the AI draft:

Header: your name, city and province or state, phone, email, LinkedIn URL. Then the date and the company's name and location. No photo, no date of birth.
Greeting: "Dear [Hiring Manager's name]," if the posting or LinkedIn gives it; otherwise "Dear [Company] hiring team,". Avoid "To whom it may concern".
Paragraph 1, the hook (2-3 sentences): the role you are applying for, and one specific reason you fit or want this company. Weak: "I am writing to apply for the position of Marketing Coordinator." Stronger: "Your spring campaign for the Calgary store openings is the kind of local, data-led marketing I have run for three years at a regional retailer."
Paragraph 2, the proof (3-4 sentences): the one or two achievements that match the posting's top requirements, with real numbers. Use the posting's words for the skills.
Paragraph 3, the fit (2-3 sentences): what you would bring to this team in particular, and how your experience lines up with the second requirement in the posting.
Close (1-2 sentences): a simple next step ("I would welcome a call to discuss how I could help with [goal]"), then "Sincerely," and your name.

Length: 250 to 400 words fits on one page and is what the match score treats as the sweet spot. For Canadian applications, the conventions are the same as in the US. If you apply to a French-language posting in Quebec, paste the French posting: the generator writes in the language of the job description, so the letter comes back in French. For more examples, see our cover letter tips, cover letters with no experience and cover letter vs resume.

Should you use AI for your cover letter?

Yes, for the draft; no, for the final version without edits. AI is good at the parts that take the longest: structuring the letter, mapping your experience to the posting's requirements and keeping the tone professional. It is weak at the parts that make a letter memorable: genuine reasons for wanting this specific job, a detail from your own experience that is not on your resume, and your voice.

A good rule: if you could send the same letter to a competitor by swapping the company name, it is not finished. Add the specific detail, read it out loud, and cut anything you would never say in an interview. Hiring managers rarely object to a candidate using tools; they object to letters that say nothing.

Cover letters and LinkedIn Easy Apply

Many LinkedIn Easy Apply forms list the cover letter as optional, and some postings ask for one. The AutoApplyMax extension auto-applies on LinkedIn Easy Apply only; on other sites (Indeed, Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, company career pages) it autofills the form and you click Submit yourself. For a role you really want, write the tailored letter here and attach it rather than relying on a generic one. Read the LinkedIn Easy Apply guide for when a letter is worth adding.

Frequently asked questions

Is the AI cover letter generator really free?

Yes. Every AutoApplyMax account gets 1 free AI credit per month, enough to generate 1 tailored cover letter (or resume). Every Rewrite AI action in the editor is free. Premium (30 credits a month) is optional.

How is this different from a generic cover letter template?

Templates are static. The AI reads the specific job description, cross-references your profile and past roles, and writes an original opening, body and closing that mention the company, the role's key requirements and the parts of your experience that match.

Can I edit the AI cover letter before sending?

Yes, end to end. Click any paragraph to edit it inline. Hover for Rewrite AI: 4 presets (shorter, warmer, more specific, add a metric) or your own instruction, and every rewrite is free. A toolbar handles font, size, spacing, alignment and undo/redo, and a live match score (length, tone, job-description keywords, personalization, opener) tells you when it's ready. Export as PDF or copy it into any portal's cover letter field.

Do I have to start from scratch every time?

No. Every draft is saved automatically in your browser, by company and role. Close the tab, come back tomorrow, and the letter for that opening is still there.

What languages does it write in?

By default the AI writes in the language of the job description: English, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese and more. You can also choose a specific language from the dashboard.

Should I use AI to write my cover letter?

Use it for the draft, then make it yours. AI is fast at structure and at matching your experience to the posting; it cannot know why you want this specific job. Add one detail only you could write, cut anything generic, and read it out loud before you send it.

Can it write a cover letter from my resume and the job description?

Yes, that is exactly how it works. The generator reads the resume in your profile and the job description you paste, then writes a letter that names the company and role and cites the parts of your real experience that match the posting's requirements.

Can employers tell if a cover letter was written by AI?

What stands out is generic writing: an opener that could fit any company, adjectives without proof, and no detail about the employer. A letter you have edited with specific, true details reads like yours, whatever tool produced the first draft.

How long should a cover letter be?

250 to 400 words, which fits on one page: three or four short paragraphs plus a greeting and a close. The live match score treats that range as the sweet spot, and the free "shorter" preset trims a paragraph that runs long.

Do I need a cover letter for LinkedIn Easy Apply?

Many Easy Apply forms make the cover letter optional, and some postings ask for one. For roles you really want, a short tailored letter is a chance to explain a career change, a relocation or a gap that your resume alone cannot.

Is there a free AI cover letter generator with no sign up?

This generator needs a free account, because the letter is written from the resume saved in your profile (1 free credit a month). The free tools that work without signing up are the ATS Score Checker and the Resume Summary Generator.

Does it work for Canadian jobs, including French postings in Quebec?

Yes. Canadian cover letters follow the same structure as US ones. The generator writes in the language of the job description, so a French posting from Quebec gets a letter in French and an English posting gets one in English.
