17,830 ATS scores: what the 2026 resume market really looks like

Six months ago we shipped a free ATS scoring tool. It's been run 17,830 times by candidates in 12 countries. Here's what the data says — and it's uncomfortable.

The bottom line

How we scored resumes

Each check pastes a job description + candidate resume into our ATS scoring engine. We compute:

Scores are 0–100. 70+ is our "safe to submit" threshold. 85+ is "top of the resume pile" territory.

The score distribution

ATS scoreCountShareWhat it means
0–29 (fail)2433.5%Auto-rejected by ATS parser errors or missing sections
30–49 (weak)1,86626.9%Recruiter bot ranks below 90% of applicants
50–69 (borderline)2,85541.1%Reaches recruiter's inbox but 8s scan fails
70–84 (good)1,46821.1%Solid — most candidates who get interviews score here
85+ (excellent)5077.3%Top of the pile — first CVs the recruiter opens
41% of candidates score in the 50–69 borderline range. Their resume reaches the recruiter but doesn't survive the 8-second scan.

The 10 most-missed keywords

These are the words that JDs demanded most frequently and candidates left off their resumes.

#KeywordMissed inInterpretation
1communication927 CVsSoft skill overused in JDs; candidates assume it's implied. Rewrite: "cross-functional communication with X team"
2excel787Finance/ops/data candidates omit this baseline — huge parser miss
3rust453Systems/data-eng shortage — Rust hires are hard to find
4management403Mid-senior candidates don't quantify management scope
5leadership364Leadership without concrete signals (team size, budget)
6compliance323Regulated industries — candidates omit certifications/frameworks
7aws270Devs list "cloud" but not the specific vendor recruiters filter for
8finance260Candidates use "P&L", "budget" instead of "finance"
9project management216Candidates say "led project" — the phrase itself is filter-friendly
10agile213Devs assume implied — recruiter's ATS wants the word explicitly

Country breakdown

RegionChecksMedian score
India (Asia/Calcutta)2,28252
US East93761
US Central39061
Germany35459
UK23864 (highest)
Canada22562
Pakistan19152
Australia15463
France9356

UK candidates score highest on median (64), India lowest (52). One hypothesis: JDs in Indian tech hubs are dense with specific certifications and tools that CVs don't always mirror.

3 uncomfortable takeaways

  1. The "communication" gap is real. If your CV never says the word "communication" (or "collaborated with", "briefed", "presented"), ATS filters that as a soft-skill miss even when your experience proves it.
  2. Tools are named specifically, not generically. Recruiters search "AWS", not "cloud". "Postgres", not "SQL database". Match the vocabulary of the JD, not a generic version.
  3. Management/leadership words need quantification. "Led team of 8, $2M budget" scores higher than "Managed cross-functional team".

What to do about it

  1. Free: paste your resume + a job description into our free ATS Score Checker — no signup, get score + missing keywords in 30 seconds.
  2. Automated: our AI CV generator rewrites your resume for each JD you paste, keyword-matched by default — 2 free credits on signup.
