"ATS score" tools are everywhere. Most give you a number and a colour bar. Very few actually explain which keyword is missing, why the parser failed on a bullet, or how the ATS filter behaves. This piece tests the four most-searched free ATS score checkers on the same CV + JD, then explains what the score really tells you.

The test setup
A single realistic CV — mid-level product manager, 5 years experience, mix of SaaS and marketplace roles — pitted against a mid-level product manager JD from a Series B fintech. Both files are anonymised versions of real applications. Same CV, same JD, four tools, one afternoon.
1. AutoApplyMax ATS Score Checker
Cost: Free, unlimited, no signup.
What it gave us: Score 71/100. Broke down the score into three components: keyword match, seniority alignment, and CV structure. Listed the 12 missing keywords in a clickable pill layout (paste-into-CV UX). Also flagged 3 weak bullets that could be quantified.
Verdict: Most actionable of the four. The click-to-inject keywords into a target bullet is unique — everyone else just tells you the score.
2. Resume Worded
Cost: Free score with unlimited re-uploads once you create a free account; the full report needs Pro, from $49/month (checked November 4, 2026).
What it gave us: Score 68/100 with a "Line-by-line" analysis. Solid feedback on bullet-level phrasing (weak verbs, missing metrics) which the others don't do. Slower to run.
Verdict: Best bullet-level feedback. Free-tier caps are tight. See Resume Worded.
3. Jobscan
Cost: A free account gets 5 scans a month. Premium is $49.95/month or $89.95 per quarter, according to Jobscan's own blog (checked November 4, 2026).
What it gave us: Score 76/100 with detailed hard-skill / soft-skill / job-title match breakdown. Best UX for pasting a JD (they parse it into structured requirements). Also the priciest paid tier.
Verdict: Most professional-feeling. Free plan runs out in a day if you scan multiple applications. See Jobscan.

4. VMock
Cost: Free for students of partner universities; paid otherwise ($15+/mo).
What it gave us: Score 82/100 from their SMART scoring algorithm. Focused more on general CV quality than JD-specific match (their model is university-career-centre positioned). Less useful for tailoring to a specific role.
Verdict: Great for students and general polish. Not what you want when the question is "does this CV match THIS JD". See VMock.
Score differences explained
Same CV. Same JD. Four different scores: 71, 68, 76, 82. That's a 14-point spread. Which one is "right"?
None of them, individually. The scores are directional signals, not ground truth. Real ATS filters (Greenhouse, Workday, Lever, Ashby) use different parsers and different weighting. The most useful signal is consistency: if three of four tools score you below 70, you have real optimisation work to do. If your scores span 65 to 85 across tools, you're roughly at the passing bar and further improvements have diminishing returns.
