Hannah Clarke: Grade 3 Teacher (Long-Term Occasional)
Hannah's resume follows the usual Ontario path: occasional teaching, then a long-term assignment. It leads with her Ontario College of Teachers certification and divisions, then shows planning, reading growth, IEP work and family communication. Being requested back by name is a real signal principals notice. Practicum details stay short because she now has her own class.

How to write each section of a teacher resume
Header and certification
Under your name, list your certification exactly: the state or province, certificate type, subject areas and grade levels, such as Texas Educator Certificate, Mathematics 7-12, or Ontario Certified Teacher, Primary/Junior. Hiring committees check this first, and a missing grade band can remove you from consideration.
Add endorsements and additional qualifications like ESL, special education or French as a second language. They often decide placements.
Summary
State your grade levels, subjects, years of teaching and one or two strengths with evidence, such as literacy intervention, AP courses, English learners or inclusive classrooms. Keep it short; principals read many resumes during hiring season.
Avoid statements about loving children or making a difference. Show it through the specific practices and results in your experience, which a hiring committee can ask about in the interview.
Teaching experience
For each position, give the grade, subjects, class size or student load and the school type. Then show planning, assessment, differentiation, family communication and contributions to the school. Results can include reading level growth, course pass rates, AP enrollment or participation in programs you started; keep them accurate and never identify students.
Occasional, substitute and long-term assignments count as teaching experience. Group short assignments and highlight anything that shows you were trusted, such as being requested back.
Student teaching and practicum
New teachers should list student teaching or practicum placements with grade, subject, length and responsibilities, especially any period of full-time lead teaching. Mention a unit you designed or an assessment you created.
Related work with children, such as tutoring, camp leadership, coaching or educational assistant roles, is worth including. It shows classroom readiness before certification and gives interviewers concrete situations to ask about.
Education and professional learning
List your teacher education program, degree and year, plus content degrees for secondary teaching. Add professional development that changed your practice, such as structured literacy training, AP summer institutes or restorative practices, rather than every workshop you attended.
Advanced recognition, like National Board Certification in the US, deserves a prominent line. Keep clearance or background check details for the application form.
Teacher resume summary examples
New-teacher objective: Newly certified Primary/Junior teacher seeking a contract or long-term occasional position. Brings practicum experience in Grades 1 and 5, a Reading Part 1 AQ, small-group literacy instruction and confident use of Google Classroom with families.
It states certification, grade divisions and practical strengths that match an elementary posting.
Early-career summary: Grade 3 teacher in a long-term occasional assignment, planning literacy and math from the Ontario curriculum, running daily guided reading groups and supporting students with IEPs alongside resource staff. Communicates weekly with every family.
It sounds like a classroom teacher, not a candidate, which helps when applying for permanent positions.
Mid-career summary: Certified high school math teacher with six years teaching Algebra I through AP Precalculus to diverse classes, including many English learners. Uses common assessments and reteaching to raise end-of-course results, mentors new teachers and runs the math club.
Subjects, student population and results come first, which is what secondary hiring committees look for.
Veteran summary: National Board Certified English teacher and department chair with 15 years in public high schools. Leads curriculum and assessment work for nine teachers, widened access to AP Literature and keeps a full teaching load while advising the student newspaper.

Teacher resume bullet examples: weak vs strong
The strong versions use made-up figures for a fictional candidate. Replace them with your own real numbers, or describe the scope (team size, volume, frequency) if you have none.
Grade, subjects, curriculum and class size give the reader the full picture.
Uses the school's own measure of growth and stays modest and specific.
Shows the assessment routine and a result principals track.
Uses correct terms and shows collaboration with the support team.
Names specific strategies and the colleague you worked with.
Regularity and full coverage of families show reliable communication habits.
Shows what the department achieved under your leadership, not just the title.
Growth and competition results show commitment beyond the bell.

US vs Canada: teacher resumes and pay
United States
US public school teachers need a license or certificate from their state, usually after an approved preparation program, student teaching and exams such as Praxis or state-specific tests; requirements and names differ by state. Reciprocity agreements make moving easier but rarely automatic. List the certificate area and grade band exactly, plus endorsements such as ESL or special education. Background checks and fingerprinting are standard. Private and charter schools may have different rules. US resumes for teachers often run one to two pages.

Canada
Teaching in Canada is regulated provincially. Ontario requires certification by the Ontario College of Teachers, British Columbia uses the Teacher Certification Branch, and Quebec issues a teaching licence through its education ministry and usually expects French. Many new teachers start on occasional or supply lists before getting long-term or permanent contracts, so list those assignments. French immersion and core French qualifications are in demand. A vulnerable sector check is required for most school jobs. Internationally educated teachers must have credentials assessed by the provincial regulator.

FAQ
How should I list my teaching certification?
Put it near the top, right under your name or in a short credentials section. Include the state or province, certificate type, subject areas, grade levels and expiration if relevant. Add endorsements and additional qualifications in the same place so hiring committees can see your placements at a glance.
How do I write a teacher resume with only student teaching?
Treat your student teaching or practicum as your main experience, with grades, subjects, length and the period you led the class. Add related work with children, such as tutoring, coaching or camps. A short summary naming your certification and target grades helps principals place you.
Should I include test scores or student results?
Yes, when they are accurate and fair, such as pass rate changes over time or reading level growth for a group. Never identify students. If your school does not share results, describe growth in qualitative terms or mention program participation and completion.
Do substitute or occasional assignments belong on my resume?
Yes. They show classroom management across many settings. Group them under one entry with the board or district, grade range and number of schools, then highlight anything that shows trust, such as long-term assignments or being requested back.
What extracurriculars should teachers list?
List clubs, coaching, committees and events you ran, with a short result like membership growth or competitions entered. Schools value teachers who contribute beyond class time. Keep it to the most significant few rather than every event you supervised.
