Priya Raghunathan: Mechanical Design Co-op
Priya has two co-op terms, and each bullet ends with what changed on a real part: fewer part numbers, a cracked bracket fixed, a fixture that ended mislocated holes. Her capstone and student team project show design judgment beyond drafting. Because she lives in Ontario, her titles say co-op and her summary mentions her engineering intern registration instead of calling her an engineer outright.

Margaret Osei-Lindqvist: Lead Mechanical Engineer
Margaret's resume opens with her PE license because it matters for sign-off authority. Her top job reads like a lead's: team size, standards she set, supplier negotiations and a warranty fix with clear engineering reasoning. Older roles are short, and the master's degree sits under education rather than taking space in the summary.

How to write each section of a mechanical engineer resume
Header and license line
Include your name, city and state or province, email, phone and LinkedIn. Add a portfolio link only if it shows your own CAD models, drawings or prototype photos and does not expose an employer's confidential designs.
If you hold a license, put it next to your name or directly under it: Jane Smith, PE, or Jane Smith, P.Eng. Engineer-in-training or engineer intern status belongs in a certifications or licensure line, written exactly as your board or regulator words it.
Summary
State your years of experience, the products or systems you design (consumer electronics, HVAC, medical devices, heavy equipment, aerospace structures) and your main CAD platform. Recruiters filter heavily by industry and CAD tool, so naming both early avoids being screened out.
Add one line on what you are best at, such as thermal management, plastics, test, or launching products with contract manufacturers.
Experience
Write bullets that follow a part or system through its life: what you designed or changed, which tool or analysis you used, and what happened at test, in production or in the field. Good mechanical measures include unit cost, part count, weight, warranty claims, test pass rates, lead time and scrap.
If your work is under NDA, describe the product category and the engineering problem instead of the customer or program name. Defense and aerospace candidates should keep program details generic and never list controlled technical data.
Skills
Split skills into CAD and PLM, analysis tools, manufacturing processes and engineering methods. Name the exact CAD package and version family you know, since SolidWorks, Creo, NX and CATIA users are not interchangeable in the eyes of most hiring managers.
Manufacturing processes deserve their own line: injection molding, sheet metal, castings, machining, welding or additive. Listing processes you have designed for tells a manager you can talk to suppliers on day one.
Education, licensure and projects
List your engineering degree and school, and note an ABET-accredited program in the US or a CEAB-accredited program in Canada if it applies, since licensing paths depend on accreditation. Graduate degrees go here, not in the summary.
New grads should add a design project section: capstone, Formula SAE, Baja SAE, robotics or rocketry teams. Describe your specific subsystem, the calculations or simulation you did, and whether the build worked.
Mechanical Engineer resume summary examples
Entry-level objective: Mechanical engineering graduate seeking an entry-level design role on a product team that builds and tests its own hardware. Brings two co-op terms in SolidWorks and FEA, a working capstone prototype and hands-on fixture design from the shop floor.
It states the type of work wanted and backs the request with design, analysis and shop experience a hiring manager can verify.
New-grad summary: Mechanical engineer-in-training with co-op experience in sheet metal enclosures, toleranced drawings and vibration failure fixes. Uses SolidWorks, ANSYS and Python daily, and has released parts through PLM under senior review. Registered EIT working toward licensure.
It reads like early experience rather than coursework, and it states licensure status plainly, which matters in Canada and for consulting roles.
Mid-level summary: Mechanical design engineer with six years taking electromechanical products from concept to mass production. Specializes in molded enclosures, thermal management and tolerance analysis, and works directly with molders and contract manufacturers to cut cost and fix assembly problems before launch.
The product type, specialty and manufacturing reach all appear in two sentences, which is what a design manager screens for.
Senior summary: Professional Engineer and engineering lead with 14 years in heavy equipment drivetrains and hydraulics. Runs teams of engineers and designers through launches, sets analysis and review standards, and reduces warranty cost by fixing root causes. Stays hands-on in NX and fatigue analysis.
License, domain, leadership scope and hands-on depth are all present, so the reader knows this is a technical lead and not a pure manager.
Mechanical Engineer resume bullet examples: weak vs strong
The strong versions use made-up figures for a fictional candidate. Replace them with your own real numbers, or describe the scope (team size, volume, frequency) if you have none.
Names what was designed, the design decision and its effect on cost and supply chain.
Shows engineering judgment: what the analysis found, what you changed and how test results confirmed it.
Volume, standard and a quality result turn routine drafting into a credible strength.
Lists the specific tests and shows you owned the plan, not just watched the chamber.
Connects a small, precise design change to a production problem everyone on the floor felt.
Gives the design change, the constraint that was preserved and an annual figure a manager can trust.
Shows a disciplined method and a permanent fix rather than just involvement in an investigation.
Team size, the mechanism you used and a delivery outcome make leadership concrete.

Soft skills, and how to prove them
- Cross-functional communication: Describe a design review or change you negotiated with manufacturing, quality or electrical engineering, and the decision that came out of it.
- Hands-on problem solving: Mention a time you went to the line, test lab or field site to diagnose a problem and what you found there.
- Supplier collaboration: Name a design-for-manufacturing change you worked out with a molder, caster or machine shop, and its cost or lead-time effect.
- Attention to detail: Point to drawing quality results, such as releases with no supplier questions, or a tolerance error you caught before tooling.
- Mentoring: Name the interns or junior engineers you guided through releases, FE preparation or their first design reviews.
Certifications and licenses
- Professional Engineer (PE), Mechanical (State engineering licensing boards (exam by NCEES)): Required to seal drawings in the US, common in HVAC, MEP and consulting work, and often optional in manufacturing under industrial exemptions.
- Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam / EIT or EI (NCEES exam; designation granted by the state board): The first step toward a PE; worth listing on entry-level resumes because it shows you are on the licensure track.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) (Provincial regulators such as PEO, APEGA or Engineers and Geoscientists BC): Needed in Canada to use the title engineer and to take responsibility for engineering work; Quebec uses ing. through the OIQ.
- Certified SolidWorks Professional (CSWP) (Dassault Systèmes): A useful proof of CAD depth for design roles that run on SolidWorks; the associate level CSWA suits students.
- Certified Six Sigma Green Belt (CSSGB) (ASQ): Helpful for manufacturing and quality-facing mechanical roles where process improvement is part of the job.
US vs Canada: mechanical engineer resumes and pay
United States
In the US, mechanical engineers in manufacturing often work without a PE license because many states exempt industrial employers, but consulting, HVAC and building systems roles usually need a PE to seal drawings. The path is the FE exam, supervised experience and the PE Mechanical exam from NCEES, with licensing granted by each state board. Defense and aerospace jobs may require US citizenship, ITAR eligibility or a security clearance; state an active clearance on the resume if you have one. Leave out photo, age and marital status.
| BLS occupation | 10th pct. | Median | 90th pct. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mechanical Engineers (SOC 17-2141) | $73,990 | $104,110 | $164,340 |
Annual wages, US national, BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025.
Canada
In Canada, engineer and professional engineer are protected titles regulated by each province, for example PEO in Ontario, APEGA in Alberta and the OIQ in Quebec. Without a P.Eng. or a registered engineer-in-training status, describe yourself as a mechanical designer or mechanical engineering graduate, and keep your employer's official title on job entries. Licensure requires an accredited degree or equivalent assessment, supervised experience and a professional practice exam; details vary by province. Co-op terms carry real weight. Quebec roles generally require French, and the OIQ title is ingénieur.
| Job Bank occupation | Low | Median | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mechanical Engineer (NOC 21301) | $30.00/h | $45.67/h | $72.49/h |
Canada-wide wages in CAD, Job Bank (Government of Canada), reference period 2023-2024. Provincial figures differ; follow the link for your province.

FAQ
Do I need a PE license to get a mechanical engineering job?
Not for most manufacturing and product design jobs in the US, since many states exempt engineers working for industrial employers. A PE matters for consulting, HVAC and building systems, and for anyone who will seal drawings. If you have passed the FE exam, list it, because it shows you are on the path.
Should I include a portfolio on a mechanical engineer resume?
A short portfolio helps design candidates, especially new grads. Use renders, drawings and prototype photos from school, personal or competition projects. Do not share employer CAD or drawings without permission, since most of that work is confidential. Link the portfolio in your header and reference one or two pieces in your bullets.
How do I describe confidential or defense work?
Describe the product category, your engineering role and the type of result, such as reducing weight or passing qualification testing, without program names or technical data. If you held a security clearance, state the level and that it is active or inactive. Keep detail generic enough that the resume could be shared outside the company.
Which CAD software should I put first?
Put the one the posting names, if you know it well. If you know several, list your strongest first and mention the others. Hiring managers know that moving between CAD tools takes time, so be honest about depth; claiming advanced skill in four packages invites a test you may not pass.
Can I call myself a mechanical engineer in Canada without a P.Eng.?
Using the title engineer without a license can draw action from the provincial regulator. Recent graduates registered as engineers-in-training can say so. Otherwise use mechanical designer or mechanical engineering graduate in your headline, and list each job with the title your employer actually gave you.
