Electrical Engineer Resume Examples: Entry Level, Mid Level and Senior

Electrical engineering covers very different jobs, from designing circuit boards to planning substations, and your resume has to make clear which one you do. Reviewers look for your specialty, the tools and codes you design with, and evidence that your designs passed testing, inspection or commissioning. The three samples below show a new graduate in electronics hardware, a mid-level power distribution engineer in building and industrial projects, and a senior utility engineer leading substation programs. Together they show how to write for product companies, consulting firms and utilities, and how licensure fits each path.

Entry level

Nathaniel Okoye-Brandt: Hardware Engineering Intern

Nathaniel's resume is aimed at hardware design, so every bullet involves a board, a measurement or a test method. His internship shows the full loop from design to bench validation, and the lab assistant role proves comfort with equipment and teaching. The senior design project adds power and field-test experience. A passed FE is listed because it keeps the licensure option open.

How to write each section of a electrical engineer resume

Header and license line

List name, city, phone, email and LinkedIn. Hardware engineers can add a portfolio or GitHub with board photos, schematics from personal projects and test results; never post employer designs. Licensed engineers add PE or P.Eng. after their name and list jurisdictions in a licensure line.

Utility and field roles may require a driver's license or travel; mention it when the posting does.

Summary

State your specialty first: electronics hardware, power distribution for buildings, industrial controls, utility transmission and distribution, renewables, or embedded systems. These are different hiring markets with different reviewers.

Then add years of experience, the main tools and codes you design to, and license status. One sentence on the type of projects or products you work on finishes the picture, such as hospitals, data centers, consumer devices or rural distribution.

Experience

Write bullets around designs, studies, tests and field work, and say what happened: boards that passed compliance testing, studies that changed protective device settings, projects that energized on schedule. Include project values, voltage levels or product volumes when they help show scale.

Be precise about your role. Engineers-in-training should say work was done under a licensed engineer, and hardware engineers should separate what they designed from what they tested or supported.

Skills

Group skills by design tools, analysis and simulation, codes and standards, and hands-on or field skills. Hardware roles want Altium or Cadence, SPICE and bench equipment; power roles want ETAP or SKM, AutoCAD or Revit and code knowledge; controls roles want PLC platforms and SCADA.

List codes as you used them: NEC and NFPA 70E in the US, the Canadian Electrical Code in Canada, plus relevant IEEE, UL or CSA standards.

Education and licensure

List your electrical engineering degree and school, plus a master's if you specialized in power systems, signal processing or similar. Accredited programs (ABET in the US, CEAB in Canada) matter for licensure.

Licensure matters most for building, utility and consulting roles. Show FE, EIT, PE or P.Eng. status clearly. Product hardware roles rarely require a license, so keep that line short there.

Electrical Engineer resume summary examples

Entry-level objective: Electrical engineering graduate seeking an entry-level hardware design role building power and sensing electronics. Brings an internship designing and testing DC-DC converters in Altium, a field-tested senior design board and a passed FE exam.

It names the specialty and backs it with design, test and field evidence, which hardware managers look for first.

New-grad summary: Hardware engineer with internship experience in schematic capture, four-layer PCB layout and bench validation of power supplies. Uses LTspice, Altium and Python test automation, and has debugged real noise problems on production boards.

It shows tools in use and a real debugging story, which stands out among graduates who list only coursework.

Mid-level summary: Professional engineer with six years designing power distribution for healthcare, commercial and industrial buildings. Produces single-line diagrams, short-circuit and arc flash studies and construction drawings, and supports projects through commissioning. Licensed in Ontario.

Specialty, building types, deliverables and license are all present for consulting firms that bill by sector.

Senior summary: Licensed PE and principal engineer with 15 years in utility transmission and distribution. Leads substation design, protection and renewable interconnection projects within a large capital program, and develops engineers into project leads.

It names utility scope, technical specialty and people leadership, which separate principal engineers from strong individual contributors.

US vs Canada: electrical engineer resumes and pay

United States

In the US, a PE license matters most for building design, utilities and consulting, where engineers seal drawings; many product and electronics companies operate under industrial exemptions and do not require it. Licensing is by state after the FE exam, experience and the PE Electrical and Computer exam from NCEES. Building work follows the NEC as adopted by each state or city, and workplace electrical safety follows NFPA 70E. Defense electronics roles may require citizenship, ITAR eligibility or a clearance. Leave out photo, age and marital status.

BLS occupation10th pct.Median90th pct.
Electrical Engineers (SOC 17-2071)$76,550$120,630$184,300

Annual wages, US national, BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025.

Canada

In Canada, practising engineering and using the title engineer require a license from a provincial regulator such as PEO, APEGA or the OIQ; graduates register as engineers-in-training first. Electrical installations follow the Canadian Electrical Code as adopted provincially, and products need certification marks from accredited bodies such as CSA. Electrical safety authorities differ by province, such as the Electrical Safety Authority in Ontario. Use metric units. Quebec work requires French, and the OIQ title is ingénieur.

FAQ

Do electrical engineers need a PE license?

It depends on the sector. Engineers who design building systems, utility infrastructure or public projects usually need a PE to seal drawings and advance. Many hardware and product engineers never get one. If you work in a sector that values it, list your FE or EIT status as soon as you have it.

How do I choose which specialty to highlight?

Pick the specialty that matches the posting, and order your skills and bullets to fit. If you have experience in two areas, such as controls and power distribution, lead with the one the employer needs and keep the other as supporting experience. Avoid a summary that claims every area at once.

Should I include personal electronics projects?

Yes, especially early in your career. Projects with schematics, board layouts, firmware and test results show initiative and practical skill. Link photos or repositories and describe what you measured. Keep them out of the way once you have strong professional experience, unless they show a skill your jobs do not.

What codes should I list on my resume?

List the codes you have designed to, such as the NEC and NFPA 70E in the US or the Canadian Electrical Code in Canada, plus relevant IEEE, UL or CSA standards. Mention them in context, for example designing emergency power to code, rather than as a long list.

Can I call myself an electrical engineer in Canada without a P.Eng.?

Using the title engineer without a license can lead to action by the provincial regulator. Graduates registered as engineers-in-training can say so. Otherwise use a descriptive title like electrical designer or electrical engineering graduate, while listing each job with the title your employer used.
