Medical Assistant Resume Examples: Entry Level, Mid Level and Senior

A medical assistant resume is scanned for three things: whether you are certified, which clinical and front-office tasks you can do on your own, and whether you can keep a provider's schedule moving without cutting corners. Clinic managers want to see rooming, vitals, injections, phlebotomy, EHR work, scheduling and insurance tasks named plainly, along with the specialty and patient volume you are used to. The samples below show a newly certified MA coming out of an externship, a medical office assistant in British Columbia and a lead MA who trains staff and runs clinic flow.

Entry level

Jasmine Torres: Medical Assistant Extern

Jasmine's externship is short, so every bullet shows a skill a clinic needs on day one: rooming, venipuncture, specimen accuracy and procedure setup. Her dental front-desk job is included because insurance, check-in and phones transfer directly to medical front office work. Bilingual service sits in the summary and skills because many clinics list Spanish as preferred.

How to write each section of a medical assistant resume

Header and certification

Put your name, city, phone and email at the top, followed by your credential: CMA (AAMA), RMA (AMT), CCMA (NHA) or NCMA (NCCT), plus BLS. Many US employers require or strongly prefer certification, and some states, such as Washington, require MAs to register with the state health department, so list any state registration too.

In Canada, list your medical office assistant diploma or certificate and first aid and CPR level. There is usually no required certification, so training and EMR experience carry the weight.

Summary

State whether you are clinical, administrative or both, the specialties you have worked in and your patient volume. Add your EHR or EMR system and any languages you speak with patients, since both directly affect how quickly you can start.

Newly certified MAs should mention externship hours and the clinic type. Experienced MAs aiming for lead roles should mention training and supervising others.

Experience

List the clinical tasks you perform independently, such as rooming, vitals, injections, phlebotomy, EKGs, point-of-care tests and procedure assistance, and the administrative ones, such as scheduling, insurance verification, prior authorizations, referrals and billing. Give the specialty and approximate daily patient numbers.

Use results that clinic managers notice: fewer rejected specimens, cleared backlogs, filled cancellations, smoother onboarding. Avoid claiming clinical decisions; MAs work under provider orders, and the resume should reflect that.

Externship and training

If you are new, place your externship as a job with dates and hours, and describe what you did with supervision. Include the number of procedures you completed if your program tracked them, such as venipunctures or injections.

Previous jobs in retail, food service, call centers or dental offices are worth keeping in one or two lines when they show patient-facing or front-desk skills.

Skills

Split skills into clinical, administrative and systems. List the specific EHR, such as Epic, athenahealth or eClinicalWorks in the US, or Accuro, OSCAR Pro or PS Suite in Canada. Include medical terminology, infection control and privacy rules such as HIPAA or provincial privacy laws.

Languages are a strong selling point in clinics with diverse patients, so list the level for each one honestly.

Medical Assistant resume summary examples

Entry-level objective: Newly certified clinical medical assistant seeking a back-office role in family medicine or pediatrics. Brings a 160-hour externship with rooming, venipuncture and injections, a year of front-desk insurance work and fluent Spanish.

Names the setting and lists three concrete strengths, which is enough for a clinic manager to see the fit.

New-grad summary: CCMA-certified medical assistant trained in a family medicine clinic seeing up to 22 patients per provider each day. Confident with vitals, phlebotomy, EKGs and point-of-care testing, and experienced with check-in, insurance verification and confirmation calls from a dental front desk.

Covers clinical and front-office skills, which is what most small practices need from a new hire.

Mid-level summary: Medical office assistant with five years in family practice and dermatology clinics in British Columbia. Runs multi-physician schedules, MSP billing and referral tracking in Accuro, and trains new front-office staff. Fluent in English, Punjabi and Hindi.

Uses the Canadian title and billing terms, and shows the organizational load a senior MOA carries.

Senior summary: Lead medical assistant with eleven years in primary care and pediatrics, supervising twelve MAs across two clinics. Builds onboarding and competency checks, manages vaccine inventory and records, and adjusts scheduling templates with providers to keep patient flow steady.

It presents the candidate as a supervisor with clear responsibilities rather than a long-serving assistant.

US vs Canada: medical assistant resumes and pay

United States

US medical assistant duties are shaped by state law and the delegating provider, so what you can do, such as injections or certain point-of-care tests, varies by state. Some states, like Washington, require MAs to hold a state credential. Many employers require national certification such as CMA, RMA or CCMA. Name your EHR, mention HIPAA training and insurance tasks like prior authorizations. Bilingual Spanish is often listed as preferred. Leave out photo, age and marital status.

Medical Assistants (SOC 31-9092)$36,050$45,690$59,310

Canada

In Canada, the closest role is usually called medical office assistant or medical office administrator, and it is mainly administrative: scheduling, provincial billing such as OHIP or MSP, referrals, charting and reception. Clinical tasks like injections are generally done by nurses, though limited tasks may be delegated depending on the province and clinic. There is no national certification requirement; college diplomas or certificates are typical. Name your EMR, such as Accuro, OSCAR Pro or PS Suite, and follow provincial privacy laws. French is required in most Quebec clinics.

FAQ

Do I need to be certified to work as a medical assistant?

Not in every state, but many employers, especially health systems, require or prefer CMA, RMA or CCMA certification, and some states require a credential for certain tasks. Certification also makes it easier to move between clinics. In Canada, certification is not usually required for medical office assistants.

How do I list my externship?

List it like a job: title, clinic, city and dates, with two or three bullets about what you did under supervision. Include the number of hours and any procedure counts your program tracked. It is often the most relevant experience on a new MA's resume, so place it at the top.

Should I include front-desk or customer service experience?

Yes, briefly. Check-in, phones, insurance and handling upset customers are part of most MA jobs, especially in small practices. Keep older retail or restaurant jobs to one or two lines focused on those transferable skills.

What is the difference between a clinical and administrative medical assistant resume?

A clinical resume leads with rooming, vitals, injections, phlebotomy and procedures. An administrative one leads with scheduling, billing, referrals and insurance. Many postings want both, so balance them and adjust the order to match the job ad.

Can a US medical assistant work as a medical office assistant in Canada?

Usually yes, since the role is not regulated and clinics hire on skills. Expect to learn the provincial billing system and a Canadian EMR, and note that clinical tasks may be narrower. Describe your administrative experience prominently and list the systems you can learn quickly.
