Lauren Whitfield-Cruz: Family Nurse Practitioner
Lauren is new to the NP role, so her previous RN career carries much of the page, rewritten around the skills that transfer: triage, assessment, teaching and leadership. Her NP job shows the population and practice arrangement honestly, without inventing outcomes. Credentials sit near the top because credentialing checks them first, and Texas practice under a prescriptive authority agreement is named plainly.

Nadia Chaudhry: Nurse Practitioner – Primary Health Care
Nadia's resume uses Ontario conventions: Registered Nurse in the Extended Class, the College of Nurses of Ontario, rostered patients and Canadian spelling. Her bullets describe panel size, programs she leads and work with dietitians and pharmacists. There are no claims about patient outcomes; programs and processes are shown instead, which is safer and easier to verify.

Marcus Bellweather: Lead Nurse Practitioner, Hospital Medicine
Marcus is applying for leadership roles, so team size, protocols, the practice council and a new clinic come first. His ICU years stay on the page because acute care judgment matters in hospital medicine, but they are shortened. The DNP and teaching role support his academic and leadership credibility without crowding the clinical story.

How to write each section of a nurse practitioner resume
Licensure, certification and registrations
Place a credentials block near the top. In the US, list your APRN or NP license and state, your national certification with the certifying body (ANCC or AANPCB, for example FNP-BC or FNP-C), prescriptive authority where your state issues it separately, DEA registration and, if the employer asks, your NPI. Include expiration dates if a posting requests them, and list every state where you hold an active license.
In Canada, list your registration with the provincial regulator and your NP category, such as Registered Nurse in the Extended Class with the College of Nurses of Ontario, or the equivalent with BCCNM or another provincial college. Do not list license numbers if you are posting the resume publicly.
Summary
State your population focus and setting first: family, adult-gerontology primary or acute care, pediatrics, psychiatric-mental health or women's health, in clinics, hospitals, long-term care or telehealth. Then add years as an NP, any prior RN specialty and one or two distinctive strengths such as procedures, a language or a program you lead.
New graduates should be direct about being newly certified and lean on their RN experience and rotations.
Clinical experience
For each NP role, give the setting, population, typical daily volume or panel size and the scope you practice under, such as independent practice, a collaborative agreement or hospital privileges. Name procedures you perform and conditions you manage most often.
Avoid claims about patient outcomes unless your organization published or formally reported them; describe programs, protocols, teaching and process changes instead. Keep earlier RN roles shorter as your NP experience grows, focusing on specialty and leadership.
Clinical rotations for new graduates
New NPs should list precepted rotations by specialty and setting, such as family medicine, pediatrics, women's health or psychiatry, and what you managed under supervision. You can group them in one entry rather than listing each preceptor.
Do not name patients or include details that could identify them. If a rotation involved a population you want to work with, such as rural patients or a specific language group, mention it.
Education, skills and memberships
List your MSN, DNP or Canadian master's NP program with year, then your BSN or BScN. A DNP project can be named in one line if it relates to the role.
Skills should cover clinical competencies, procedures, EHR systems and languages. Professional memberships such as a state NP association or the Nurse Practitioners' Association of Ontario can follow, along with life support certifications.
Nurse Practitioner resume summary examples
Entry-level objective: Newly certified family nurse practitioner seeking a primary or urgent care position with a supportive collaborating physician. Brings six years of emergency nursing, rotations in pediatrics and women's health, and fluent Spanish for direct patient communication.
New NPs are hired partly on their RN background, so the objective connects it to the practice setting and adds a useful language skill.
New-grad summary: FNP-C with an MSN and six years of emergency department nursing. Completed precepted rotations in family medicine, pediatrics and women's health, and manages acute visits and chronic disease follow-up in a community health center. Holds Texas APRN licensure, prescriptive authority and DEA registration.
It answers credentialing questions immediately and shows the populations and visit types the candidate is ready to manage.
Mid-level summary: Primary health care nurse practitioner with five years in NP-led primary care and urgent care. Carries a panel of adults and older adults, leads a diabetes program with a dietitian and pharmacist, and precepts NP students from two universities.
Panel, program leadership and teaching show the next step beyond seeing patients, which is what mid-level NP hiring looks for.
Senior summary: Adult-gerontology NP and DNP with twelve years in hospital medicine, post-acute care and transitional clinics. Leads a team of nine advanced practice providers, writes protocols with physician leadership and chairs the APP practice council. Focused on safe discharges and well-run handoffs.
It positions the candidate for leadership by naming team size, protocol work and governance roles, not just clinical years.
Nurse Practitioner resume bullet examples: weak vs strong
The strong versions use made-up figures for a fictional candidate. Replace them with your own real numbers, or describe the scope (team size, volume, frequency) if you have none.
Panel size, ages and visit types tell a clinic director exactly what workload you handle.
Describes a program and team instead of a diagnosis, without claiming outcomes you cannot cite.
Procedures are often a hiring requirement, so listing them by name saves the reader from guessing.
Shows initiative and a service you built, which matters for senior roles.
Collaboration is credible when it produces a protocol or decision others use.
A specific process improvement reads better than a general category of care.
Names the programs and the level of supervision, signalling trust from academic partners.
Team size and concrete leadership tasks make the title meaningful.

Soft skills, and how to prove them
- Clinical judgment: Describe the setting and complexity you manage independently, such as unscheduled acute visits or multiple chronic conditions.
- Patient communication: Mention group education, languages you use with patients or advance care planning conversations you lead.
- Interprofessional collaboration: Show programs or protocols built with physicians, pharmacists, dietitians or social workers.
- Teaching: Name precepting roles, orientation pathways or staff education you designed and delivered.
- Leadership: Give team size, councils you sit on and policies or credentialing standards you helped write.
Certifications and licenses

- Family Nurse Practitioner – Certified (FNP-C) (American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB)): The other widely held FNP certification; employers treat FNP-C and FNP-BC as equivalent for most roles.
- Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) (American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)): Required for psychiatric NP roles across the lifespan in the US.
- Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP (AGACNP-BC) (American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)): Relevant for hospital, ICU and specialty inpatient roles that need acute care certification.

US vs Canada: nurse practitioner resumes and pay
United States
US nurse practitioners are licensed by each state board of nursing, and practice rules differ widely: some states grant full practice authority, while others such as Texas require a delegation or collaborative agreement with a physician. List each active state license, your national certification, DEA registration and NPI, since credentialing checks all of them. Multistate RN compact licenses do not cover NP practice. Payer enrollment and E/M documentation experience can help in private practice. Leave out photo, age and marital status.
| BLS occupation | 10th pct. | Median | 90th pct. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nurse Practitioners (SOC 29-1171) | $101,340 | $132,300 | $174,420 |
Annual wages, US national, BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025.
Canada
Canadian NPs are regulated by provincial and territorial nursing colleges, such as the College of Nurses of Ontario, where they register as Registered Nurse in the Extended Class, or BCCNM in British Columbia. Categories, exam requirements and scope differ by province, so name your registration exactly as your college does. There is no DEA or NPI; controlled substance prescribing follows federal regulations and provincial college standards. Quebec uses the title infirmière or infirmier praticien spécialisé and requires French. Use Canadian terms such as rostered patients and EMR.
| Job Bank occupation | Low | Median | High |

FAQ
Should I include my RN experience on a nurse practitioner resume?
Yes, especially in your first years as an NP. Prior RN work shows clinical maturity and specialty knowledge. Rewrite it around transferable skills such as assessment, triage and teaching, and shorten it as your NP experience grows. Senior NPs often keep one or two lines for their most relevant RN role.
Do I need to list my license number, DEA and NPI?
Many US employers ask for them during credentialing rather than on the resume. Listing the state, license type and certification is enough on a public resume; you can add numbers when applying through a secure system. Your NPI is public, but keep DEA and license numbers off documents you post online.
How do new nurse practitioners show experience?
Combine your RN career, your precepted clinical rotations and any NP work since graduation. Describe rotations by setting and population, and highlight procedures and conditions you managed. A short, focused objective naming the setting you want also helps hiring managers place you.
What if my state requires a collaborating physician?
State the arrangement plainly in your experience if it helps explain your role, such as practicing under a prescriptive authority agreement. Employers in restricted practice states expect it. If you move to a full practice state, your resume does not need to change much beyond the new license.
Can a US nurse practitioner work in Canada?
It is possible but requires registration with the provincial nursing college, which assesses your education, certification and practice hours, and may require additional exams or a period of supervised practice. Requirements vary by province, so check the specific college before applying, and list Canadian registration status clearly once granted.
