Paralegal Resume Examples: Entry Level, Mid Level and Senior

A paralegal resume is read by attorneys who want to know one thing: can you take work off their desk without creating risk? That means naming your practice areas, the courts and agencies you file with, the documents you draft, the software you use for e-filing, discovery and case management, and the volume you handle. The samples below cover a newly licensed Ontario paralegal at a small firm, a Texas litigation paralegal and a senior paralegal running e-discovery and trial support in Chicago, each written around concrete matters, deadlines and tools.

Entry level

Simone Achterberg: Licensed Paralegal

Simone is a newly licensed Ontario paralegal, so the licence and her accredited diploma come first, and her field placement is written as real work with tribunal filings and research. She names the courts and tribunals she can appear before, which is what Ontario employers screen for. The moot hearing project shows she can draft and argue, not only file.

How to write each section of a paralegal resume

Header, licence and credentials

List your name, city, phone, email and LinkedIn. In Ontario, add your Law Society of Ontario paralegal licence directly under your name, since only licensed paralegals can provide legal services independently there. Elsewhere, add certifications such as NALA's Certified Paralegal or NFPA's Registered Paralegal.

If you are a notary public or commissioner for taking affidavits, include that too; firms often need someone who can commission documents in the office.

Summary

State your years of experience, practice areas and the forums you work in: state or federal courts, tribunals, corporate registries or immigration authorities. Then name two or three core tasks, such as discovery, closings, entity management or trial preparation, plus the systems you use.

Mention languages if you use them with clients, as many firms serve non-English-speaking clients. Keep it to three lines and avoid adjectives like meticulous unless a bullet proves them.

Experience by practice area

Group your work around practice areas and the documents you prepare. Litigation paralegals should cover pleadings, discovery, depositions, e-filing and trial support. Corporate paralegals should cover entity formation, minute books, annual filings and closing checklists. Real estate, estates, family and immigration roles each have their own core documents, so name them.

Give volume where you can, such as active matters, closings per month or attorneys supported. Never include confidential client names or case details that could identify parties.

Technology and e-filing

Firms want paralegals who can work their systems from day one. List e-filing platforms such as PACER and CM/ECF for US federal courts, state systems like eFileTexas, or Ontario's online court and tribunal filing portals. Add research tools like Westlaw, Lexis or CanLII, case management software like Clio, and document management like iManage or NetDocuments.

For e-discovery roles, name platforms such as Relativity or Everlaw and describe the tasks you handle in them, like workspace setup, searches, productions and privilege logs.

Education

List your paralegal certificate, diploma or degree with the year, and note if it is ABA-approved in the US or Law Society accredited in Ontario. A bachelor's degree in any field can follow.

New graduates can add a field placement or internship as experience, plus moot or clinic work as a project. Experienced paralegals should keep education brief and let practice-area experience lead.

Paralegal resume summary examples

Entry-level objective: Newly licensed Ontario paralegal seeking a role at a firm handling Small Claims Court and Landlord and Tenant Board matters. Brings a clinic placement with tribunal filings and CanLII research, strong deadline tracking and plain-language client communication.

New-grad summary: Paralegal with an accredited diploma, a P1 licence and a placement at a tenant legal clinic. Drafts claims, defences and tribunal applications, keeps limitation and hearing dates in Clio and prepares organized evidence briefs for hearings.

Specific documents and tools make the candidate look ready to take on files under supervision.

Mid-level summary: NALA Certified Paralegal with six years in Texas commercial and employment litigation. Handles discovery drafting, Relativity productions, filings in eFileTexas and CM/ECF, and trial exhibits. Supports three partners across about 40 active matters and works with clients in English and Spanish.

Practice area, tools, workload and language skill all appear quickly, which matches how litigation hiring partners read.

Senior summary: Litigation paralegal manager with fifteen years in complex commercial and product liability cases. Leads eight paralegals, runs large e-discovery projects with vendors and review teams, and manages trial presentation in the courtroom.

Shows team leadership, scale of discovery and trial experience, the three things firms want in a senior hire.

Paralegal resume bullet examples: weak vs strong

The strong versions use made-up figures for a fictional candidate. Replace them with your own real numbers, or describe the scope (team size, volume, frequency) if you have none.

Discovery
WeakHelped with discovery.
StrongDraft requests for production and interrogatory responses, and prepare privilege logs for attorney review on about 40 active matters.

Names the documents you produce and the workload, rather than a phase of litigation.

E-discovery
WeakUsed Relativity for document review.
StrongManage Relativity workspaces and rolling productions, coordinating vendors and keeping Bates ranges consistent across every production set.

Shows ownership of the platform and the details that cause trouble when done badly.

Court filings
WeakFiled documents with the court.
StrongFile through eFileTexas and CM/ECF for a plaintiff employment practice, checking local rules and formatting before each submission.

Names the systems and the care taken, which reassures attorneys about rejected filings.

Deadlines and docketing
WeakKept track of deadlines.
StrongTrack limitation dates, filing deadlines and hearings in Clio for every file, with weekly reminders to the firm's licensees.

Missed deadlines are malpractice risks; showing a system you run is strong evidence.

Trial support

Trial experience is valued, and the bullet shows what you actually delivered.

Names the tribunal and the client group, which is how Ontario employers scope paralegal experience.

US vs Canada: paralegal resumes and pay

United States

Most US states do not license paralegals, who work under attorney supervision, though California sets education requirements to use the title, and Arizona and Utah license limited legal practitioners under separate programs. Voluntary certifications like NALA's CP signal skill. List the courts and e-filing systems you know, since state rules differ. ABA-approved certificate programs are valued but not required. Avoid any wording that suggests you give legal advice. Leave out photo, age and marital status.

Canada

In Ontario, paralegals are licensed by the Law Society of Ontario and can independently represent clients in Small Claims Court, many tribunals such as the Landlord and Tenant Board, and some provincial offences matters. Many Ontario firms also hire law clerks, who work under lawyer supervision without a licence. Other provinces mostly do not license paralegals, though British Columbia allows designated paralegals at some firms. Quebec uses technicien juridique and requires French. Use Canadian terms like examination for discovery and statement of claim.

FAQ

What is the difference between a paralegal and a law clerk in Ontario?

A licensed paralegal holds a Law Society of Ontario licence and can represent clients in permitted courts and tribunals. A law clerk works under a lawyer's supervision without that licence, often in real estate, corporate or litigation support. Use the correct title on your resume, since employers check licensing.

Do I need a certification to be a paralegal in the US?

Usually not, but many firms prefer a paralegal certificate or degree, and voluntary credentials such as NALA's Certified Paralegal help you stand out. California has specific education requirements to use the title. Experience in the firm's practice area often matters most.

How do I show experience without revealing confidential information?

Describe matter types, volumes, courts and tasks without naming clients, parties or case numbers. Say commercial lease disputes or a product liability case instead of specific names. You can also describe case size by documents or depositions rather than amounts at stake.

Which software should a paralegal list?

List the systems the posting mentions first, then your research, e-filing, case management, document management and e-discovery tools. Westlaw or Lexis, Clio, iManage and Relativity are common. Advanced Microsoft Word skills are worth mentioning for drafting-heavy roles.

Can I move from legal assistant to paralegal?

Yes. Highlight substantive tasks you already do, such as drafting discovery, preparing exhibits or managing filings, rather than administrative ones. A paralegal certificate or certification helps confirm the step up. Target paralegal roles in the same practice area to make the change easier.
